New Maruti Suzuki Ertiga launched at Rs 7.44 lakh

The much anticipated Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has launched in India at Rs 7.44 lakh for the base petrol and Rs 10.90 lakh for the top-spec diesel variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). The second generation of Ertiga will be offered with two engine choices spanning across ten options along with a manual and an automatic transmission. Maruti Suzuki reports a waiting period of 4 weeks with the new Ertiga.


The new MUV is based on the same platform as the new Swift and the Dzire. The heartect platform has helped the Ertiga shed some weight, making it 20 kgs lighter than the previous model. The wheelbase is now at 2,740 mm; overall dimensions being: 4,395mm long, 1,735mm wide and 1,690mm high. White, silver, grey, red and blue are the five colours that Maruti will offer for the new Ertiga.  

ertiga-interior The biggest change is to the design and the powertrain department. The engine is now a 1.5-litre petrol engine which is shared with the Ciaz sedan, making 105hp at 6,000rpm and 138Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The diesel mill is the tried and tested 1.3-litre DDIS unit producing 90hp at 4,400rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1,750rpm. The SVHS unit, which is claimed to increase the efficiency will also be shared with the Ciaz. The petrol Ertiga is now also available with a 4-speed torque converter, while the diesel is only available with the manual transmission.


The top of the line variants will be equipped with Maruti’s Smart Play infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear parking sensors with camera, automatic climate control, push-button start/stop system, 15-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a height adjustable driver’s seat. Dual airbags and ABS will be standard across all variants with ESP and hill-hold function being offered on the automatic variants. Volkswagen directed to pay Rs 100 crore by NGT for emission scandal


Volkswagen is directed to pay a hefty sum of 100 Crore rupees to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB); a new committee has also been formed to estimate the losses due to emission scandal. According to the report by PTI, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed German carmaker Volkswagen to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crore with the Environment Ministry's Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The final reports were asked to be submitted by the month’s end along with a hearing with both parties of the case.


The emission scandals were exposed in 2015 with the tagline ‘Diesel gate’ as the German brand was found guilty of using cheat devices to pass emission tests. The brand faced a major blowback as many countries acted against them, the worst being the sale of diesel models from Volkswagen being completely banned from Switzerland and other countries.

Volkswagen used a program on their turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines to activate their emissions controls only during emissions testing making them a complaint to the emission levels only under test conditions while, out on the road, the emission levels exceeded the limits. The scandal led to the arrest of Audi CEO Rupert Stadler and the resignation of then Volkswagen group’s CEO Martin Winterkorn.

A wide scale investigation was carried out in all parts of the world including India. ARAI found out that Volkswagen India has used a variation of the same cheat device for Indian vehicles with the EA189 engine- 1.2-L, 1.5-L, 1.6-L and 2.0-L diesel engine variants across three different brands - Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen. The ARAI report remarked the software as a clear case of cheating.

A widescale recall was issued; Volkswagen initially Volkswagen announced plans to recall up to 11 million affected vehicles, fitted with Volkswagen's EA 189 diesel engines, including 5 million at VW brand, 2.1 million at Audi, 1.2 million at Škoda and 1.8 million light commercial vehicles, but as of today, only an estimated 36% of the cars have been recalled and fixed. Many automotive journals have found that post recall and fix, the cars performed palpably lesser while consuming 0.5litres more fuel per 100 km.

It’s estimated that around 3.23 lakh VW diesel vehicles were affected in India with diesel gate and it’s unclear as to how many vehicles were recalled and fixed.

Lamborghini Urus ST-X Concept unveiled

Lamborghini-Urus-ST-XThe Lamborghini Urus itself was considered a blasphemy by many purists as Lamborghini, a brand which stood for poster-worthy cars and Italian flamboyancy steered from their usual crop of outrageous supercars and hyper cars to make this SUV. Well, the Urus’s ST-X concept will most definitely steal the limelight from the normal Urus.

Squadra Corsa (Lamborghini’s AMG division), has unveiled this track spec concept. The ST-X concept will be used in an upcoming one make the championship, as per the brand. The concept receives a host of changes; the exteriors now sports a much aggressive aero package with a large air dam up in the front along with loads of carbon fibre bits.

The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 remains the same making 650hp and 850Nm of torque. The overall weight is down by 25% from 2,200 kg. The SUV also features a full steel roll cage, fire suppressing system and a FT3 fuel tank. The wheels are 21” inch aluminum alloys with centre bolt and bespoke Pirelli tires.

The championship will be held across FIA approved off-road and circuit stages across the Middle East and Europe. ‘Arrive and Drive’ format will be used, where the brand will provide support for the race vehicles all throughout the race season. Urus is what Lamborghini calls the world’s first super sports utility vehicle, making this the World’s first race version of an already super sports utility vehicle. I know, it all sounds confusing; same is the whole point of this “Race SUV” – I thought SUVs existed for a reason; I genuinely wish it remained a concept, but that’s just me; according to Lamborghini, a rare minority of people exist, who race SUVs for fun.

2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS launched


Mercedes Benz India launched the third-generation CLS in India in its latest avatar along with a BSIV complaint 2.0-litre diesel engine.

The CLS was first launched in 2004 as a four-door fastback with striking design elements which made the car stand out from the generic Mercedes sedans of that time. The second-generation was sold from 2011-2018 in a sedan and estate body shape.

The third-generation car was initially unveiled at LA auto show, last year. Now, Mercedes has launched the car in India with a price tag of Rs 84.70 lakh (ex-showroom, India), making it the 12th launch from Mercedes Benz India.  


The CLS shares its platform with the E-class but has grown in dimensions from the previous generation. The wheel base has been increased by 61mm (2988 mm) while the boot space is at 520 liters which is similar to the previous model. The design, although completely in tune with Mercedes’s modern designs, still follows the fluidity that was reminiscent of the older generations.

The doors are frameless, and the roofline sweeps back in to the boot area making it look like a fastback. Overall, the car looks sleeker and slimmer than the previous versions. The flowing design language is carried over to the inside also with a flowing centre cabin design incorporating a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The whole interior is finished in high quality materials with some nice touches like the turbine inspired air vents and all-digital cluster.


The CLS 300d will be powered using a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine which makes 242 bhp and a peak torque of 500 Nm. Power is sent to the wheels using a 9-speed automatic transmission reflecting a 0-100 timing of 6.2 seconds and a top whack of 250 kmh.

BMW M2 Competition launched in India

BMW India launched the M2 in its competition spec at Rs 79.90 lakhsBMW, some months back, silently listed the M2 competition in their website and started taking booking by October.

For the unintended, M2 competition is the spiciest version of 2-series coupe with an already cult status - thanks to its unfeigned traits. BMW will offer the model in one non-metallic paint finish (Alpine White) and four metallic paint finishes – Sunset Orange, Hockenheim Silver, Long Beach Blue and Black Sapphire. The M2 competition just looks right from every possible angle, the wide haunches and brute looks shout serious performance.

Under the hood sits the same 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that powers the M3 and M4. The inline-six-cylinder unit turns out 410hp and 550Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels (only!) using a 7-speed DCT transmission.  Indian petrol heads and M fanatics must make do without a stick shift as BMW doesn’t plan to bring the manual transmission to India. 0-100 comes up in 4.2 seconds with a top speed limited to 250 kmh.


Comfort, Sport and Sport+ are the three drive modes on offer, each of which alters various aspects of the car like, the car’s ride and handling and sound. It also comes with an active differential at the rear. Equipment list includes BMW’s iDrive controller, a seven-speaker system with a 6.5-inch infotainment system, front and rear parking sensors and a reverse camera. An 8.8-inch colour screen infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and a 12-speaker sound system by Harman Kardon will be optional.

The M2 is what the M3 and M4 should have been in the first place. The car has been receiving rave reviews since its inception, with some even remarking it to be the actual successor to the rather brilliant E90 M3. Porsche Cayman is the only known rival to the M2 competition in India but the M2 is cheaper and makes more power than the porker(110 bhp and 170 Nm more).
