Porsche’s classic division has built a highly collectible one-off air-cooled 911 based on the 993 Turbo S.
Project Gold is based on an original 993 turbo body shell using all new parts from Porsche Classic Division. The car is painted in a golden yellow shade like the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. The car was unveiled ahead of its global premiere at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca (USA) on September 27, 2018. The car will be a one-off production unit which will be limited to private tracks as the car is non-road legal in most of the countries. The project gold is a completely new car with the original unused body shell and 6,500 new parts from Porsche classic parts inventory which stores around 52,000 classic parts. The car is meticulously built over a period of 18 months and as it’s a completely new car rather than a restoration project, it carries a 2018 VIN which makes it non-complying with today’s regulations, making it non-road legal in most places. The Project Gold wouldn’t also comply with sound and emission regulations in most parts. That said, the car can be used in the United States as a provision allows for otherwise illegal vehicles to come into the country if they demonstrate "historical or technological significance." The rule limits the running to 2500 miles per year which will be the least of the worries as it’s a one-off collectors car. The car will be auctioned off at the RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th Anniversary Sale on October 27.
The car uses the original period correct 450 horsepower developing twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat six engine, four-wheel drive system and gearbox. The 0-100kph time of 3.7sec is also similar to the Turbo S. Only 345 Turbo Ss were originally produced, making Project Gold number 346. It also has a '1 of 1' plaque signifying the extreme rarity of the car. The Project Gold is a wet dream for Porsche fanatics all over the globe. Porsche decided to go with the build to commemorate 70 years of Porsche sports cars. Porsche is a brand which is proud of its tradition, the saying that there is no replacement for a 911 is nothing but true. The air-cooled 993 911s were the best of both worlds with a special old-school charm. Porsche as a brand to this day stands true to its tradition, which is pure driving nirvana and is worshipped by enthusiasts alike for the same. I wish they made more restomod projects based on the wild GT2 versions or maybe even the widowmaker. Only Porsche can pull something like this and that speaks highly of what the brand is!
