BS6 compilant hatchbacks, SUV launched till date Oct 2019
Due to the heavy air pollution currently grasping the entire country, the government of india has taken some huge steps forward in order to make the air quality more bearable. ‘bharat stage emission standards’ were passed which helps keep the air pollutants from vehicles in check. These standards are created and limited by the Central Pollution Control Board under the Ministry of Environment and Climate change and renewed as per the technological advancement. The bharat stage norms however, are based on European emission standards. India has applied ‘india 2000’ before followed by BS2 and BS3. The BS4 or BSIV was the fist time when more strict rules were applied in terms of emissions. Since 2016, the government of india decided to skip BS5 and jump straight to BS6 in 2020.
The BS6 emission norms however, are much more stricter and nothing the Indian automotive market has seen before. It requires the change of entire architecture of older cars to make it more efficient. Some new and sophisticated changes are made in terms of engine to reduce the amount of emission per vehicle. The diesel sector is expected to receive most losses due to this cause the entire architecture of diesel cars has to be changed making the emissions 70% less than what they normally are today.
The supreme court of india has ordered the manufacturers to sell all its bs4 compliant vehicles by april 2020. The court has also issued a ban on sale of all bs4 compliant vehicles from april 2020 but bs4 compliant vehicles are still allowed on road after that. Keeping the decline in sales of bs4 and the increase in demand of bs6, few of the companies are already on route to introduce the new bs6 compliant vehicles.
Here are few of the bs6 compliant vehicles on market right now:

The baleno has two variants, 1.2-litre K12B petrol and 1.2-litre DualJet mild-hybrid that meet the BS6 emission norms. The car will have a mileage of 21.01 kmpl for MT and 19.56 kmpl for CVT. The hybrid petrol has 5-speed MT and gives out 90ps/113nm with 23.87 kmpl. The price ranges from rs. 5.58 lakhs - rs. 8.90 lakhs.

Jeep compass trailhawk
Finally, something we’ve all been waiting for. Yes, the jeep compass offers a bs6 compliance for its diesel engine. The car comes with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It also has a 2.0-litre Multijet, 4-cylinder unit that produces 170PS of power at 350Nm. It has a claimed mileage of 14.9kmpl. the price stands between rs. 26-28 lakhs.
Kia seltos might be the first car whose variants all follow the bs6 norm. the car has total 3 engine options with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel along with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol.
The 1.4 liter turbo charge engine follows 6-speed MT and 7-speed DCT along with 140ps power and 242nm torque. It also follows 16.1kmpl for manual and 16.5kmpl for dual-clutch.
In case of the 12.5 liter petrol, it follows 6 speed MT/CVT that gives 115ps at 144nm along with 16.5kmpl for manual and 16.8 kmpl for CVT. THE 1.5 liter diesel however, 6speed MT/AT and gives 115ps power at 250nm with 21kmpl for manual and 18kmpl for automatic.
Kia seltos has a price range of rs. 9.69 lakhs to rs. 16.99 lakhs.
The car gets 2 bs6 compilant engine, a 1.2 liter naturally aspired and a hybrid, both of which are already in use in baleno. the car has the same mileage at 23.87 for hybrid, 21 kmpl for manual and 19.56 kmpl for CVT. The car has a price range of rs. 7.22 to rs. 8.90 lakhs.
Hyubdai Grand i10 Nios
The nios version of i10 is also available with bs6 compliance. The petrol unit makes 83PS power ar 114Nm and is available with a 5-speed MT and AMT. the diesel version however, remains bs4. The nios is available for rs. 5 lakhs onwards.
The bs6 compliance has followed the sedan as well. With new facelift ditching the diesel variant and offering a petrol only bs6 compliant option to the crowd, Hyundai elanta is one of the few bs6 sedans in market. The unit provides 152 ps power at 192nm torque with 14.6 kmpl of mileage. The price ranges from Rs 15.89 lakh to Rs 20.39 lakh.
It is important here to note that the bs6 compliant vehicles will do best with the bs6 fuel. Since a petrol engine wont make much difference with just 25% less emission, the diesel engine however, is reduced in 70% of its emission. It is important to only go for a diesel bs6 if the bs6 diesel fuel is also available in your locality. Use of normal fuel may cause even more emissions and can damage the engine.
At the same time, if you find the bs6 to be too costly, the bs4 cars will be offered at a much cheaper cost as april 2020 approaches.
