Mahindra Thar Review: Here's What No One Tells You About Thar

Mahindra Thar was first launched way back in 2010. Since then it has garnered a very unique set of fan following for its off-road capabilities. It is one of the best powerful off-roader equipped with a soft removable top which makes it very utilitarian. Apart from the off-road capabilities of Thar, Mahindra has also worked on exterior and interior.

Thar resembles the classic ‘Jeep’, and the ‘Wrangler’ in particular in appearance but look closely and you will say it has its own unique identity. Mahindra has continued with the retro styling of Thar but has added some new features.

Mahindra Thar Performance

Mahindra Thar is a good off-roader. The top-end variant (CRDe) is powered by a 2.5 Litre 105 BHP 16V TCI-CRDe Engine which is capable of producing 247 Nm of torque while the lower variants (DI 2WD & DI 4WD) are equipped with a 2.6 Litre 63 BHP 16V MDI 3200 TC Engine capable of producing 182.5 Nm of torque.

All the variants are equipped with a turbocharger for increased performance but the effect of the turbocharger is best highlighted for CRDe that makes the Thar a good performer, especially off-roading.

The NVH levels are significantly higher and the fact that Thar isn’t equipped with a music system makes it even worse. Ride and handling are decent. While the driver will enjoy off-roading, it’s the rear passengers that will feel the bumps. The 5-speed manual transmission is quick and the gear lever is easy to engage.

Mahindra Thar Exterior

This is what Thar is all about. The retro and classic styling is definitely a head turner. The macho look at the front is due to the seven-slat Mahindra family grille, attractive crystal-clear round headlamps, rectangular turn indicators, bumpers and wheel arches.

The rear houses a mounted tyre which completes the SUV look. The rear is a bit bland, similar to old school SUVs. A high ground clearance of 200 mm ensures that Thar will not get its underbelly scraped during off-roading. The soft-top can be removed as per convenience. For ease in stepping into the SUVs, side footsteps have also been provided. What the SUV lacks in interiors, easily covers with the exterior.

Mahindra Thar Interior

The one department where Thar has always lagged is the interior. While the older version had interiors that felt out of time, the interiors of the updated version are a step forward but far from convincing. The dual-tone dashboard is a welcome change but the parts quality and fit and finish are strictly average. The noise of engine creeps inside the cabin.

Power windows and central locking, which have become common features in vehicles nowadays is absent from the SUV. Entertainment features have been compromised as there is neither a music system nor Bluetooth connectivity. It feels as if Mahindra is still living in old age. The front seats don’t offer much support and the rear seats are even worse. Mahindra has skipped essential safety features such as ABS, EBD and Airbags. You will have to look for aftermarket options for the interiors.

Mahindra Thar Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Superb off-roading capabilities

  • Legendary appearance and excellent road presence

  • Can be modified easily

  • Dual tone interiors, much better than the previous version

  • Solid built quality, made of high strength tubular chassis

Cons:

  • No ABS, EBD, Traction control, ESP and airbags

  • Average ride quality, the scope for improvement

  • Extremely poor in terms of features. No Bluetooth, Navigation, Android Auto and Music System

  • If you are not looking at Thar for its off-roading capabilities, then much better cars available in the market

  • Seats offer very less support

Mahindra Thar Verdict

Mahindra Thar is a serious off-roading machine. It has the power, torque, toughness and durability to conquer rough terrains. It also runs well on smooth terrain, has a cult following and a strong road presence. The interiors have been worked upon well but far from being the best. Very few off-roaders are available at this price point.

While the Gypsy is cheaper but lacks in performance. On the other hand, Gurkha is expensive than Thar and Force is still a minor player, given it has a thin dealership network. A good off-roader with serious capabilities, Thar can also be used for the basic commute from one point to the another, though you will have to compromise on comfort and safety.
