Honda City in its new generation being unveiled in Thailand has had a turbo petrol being added to the line-up. Now turbo petrol engines are not new and currently the trend with petrol being popular and fuel efficiency plus engine size being important. Many car-makers are going through the turbo route and that trend will only increase in the future.
New City 1.0 Turbo specs
The new City in Thailand gets a 1.0 turbo petrol with lots of power- 122 bhp in fact but the sad news is that it is not coming to India. Now the reason is costs as making this engine and localizing it plus meeting the cost target will not seem feasible though rival Hyundai has revealed the new Verna with the 1.0 turbo petrol with power figures similar but not just that as the Skoda Rapid will also get a turbo petrol. Hyundai makes the turbo petrol for many cars and thus has the volumes and Honda will need to fit the turbo petrol in other cars in order to make it feasible to make this here and that will not happen.
Turbo petrols not selling in India?
Plus in a sedan the engine of a 1.0 turbo would not be considered powerful enough by customers and many potential City buyers might not like the small capacity 1.0 powering the City. Another reason could be the lack of success for cars with turbo-petrols. Maruti was not successful with the Baleno RS and neither was Ford to some extent with the EcoBoost as customers bought the cheaper naturally aspirated petrol engine in the line-up. Thus due to cost and maybe due to lack of demand the turbo petrol will not be coming to the line-up of many cars and that is a shame but high cost is a huge deterrent as the cheaper petrol engine would find favour.
New 1.5l engines for City instead
So instead Honda will continue with the 1.5l petrol and diesel but both would be BS6 plus will be expected to be having enhanced power figures being nearly new engines. The diesel would be expected to be more refined now and same for the petrol. As we had reported earlier Honda will be planning to launch the new City as soon as the lockdown will be lifted. The new City will be the most important model for Honda and compete with cars like the Ciaz, Verna, Rapid, Vento. So stay tuned for more on this car.
