First Drive Review - 2020 Hyundai i20 Mileage, Performance

Hyundai i20 2020 First Drive Review
We have driven the 2020 Hyundai i20 and this generation model debuts a three cylinder turbo petrol engine for the first time. Hyundai is pushing the turbo petrol engine and is putting it in all of its cars. It first launched the Venue with the turbo petrol engine and the DCT automatic gearbox while then putting it in all of the cars including even the Nios recently with the 1.0 turbo.
However, the new i20 like the Venue and Verna gets the more powerful version of the 1 litre turbo while making 120 bhp and 172Nm. In the new i20 you can buy the Turbo petrol engine with either an iMT gearbox (which is a clutch less manual) and that is the same gearbox as the one in the Venue iMT Turbo launched some time back or you can buy the top-end DCT dual clutch automatic. We tested the dual clutch automatic for a city mileage run and also drove the car in the highway.
Engine and Performance
The engine in the top-spec i20 is the 1.0 l Kappa Turbo GDi Petrol with 120 bhp and 172Nm. The DCT automatic is the 7-speed one. The peak torque comes in nice and early while the engine has enough power along with the well tuned DCT. Performance is strong for the i20 turbo as it does 0-100 km/h in under 10 seconds and the power delivery is smooth but builds on very well.
Put your foot down and the i20 will go fast along with gearbox being quick enough. While there are no paddle shifters, the gearlever can be used for manual control and it is very fun along with decent quick shifts. When you want the sudden downshifts, the DCT performs that to some extent.
In the city for quick overtakes the i20 turbo is more than good enough plus it is agile while being effortless to drive. The turbo engine is smooth and power delivery is well spread so that you do not feel the turbo lag. The DCT automatic is also helpful when driving it in traffic and it is smoother plus more relaxing over the iMT turbo even if the iMT gives you more control with its manual shift.
In the city you will also like the lack of sound along with the refined nature of the i20 turbo. The car drives well and feels comfortable. In the city the ride is generally smooth with only the really bad roads affecting it. The 170mm ground clearance is good enough for our roads.
When driven hard the new i20 has less body roll over the earlier i20 and feels more confident at high speeds in the highway too. When you drive the new i20 turbo, it feels more effortless and also stable unlike the previous i20 with the 1.2l petrol.
New i20 Turbo Mileage Review
Hyundai says that the new i20 will deliver 20.25 kmpl for the DCT while the iMT will give 20 kmpl. With a Turbo petrol the efficiency will depend on the way you drive it. If you drive it hard and fast the mileage will drop. We drove the i20 in peak traffic but also on empty roads while also doing acceleration tests on a private road. In traffic the car gave 10-12 kmpl while driving hard got the mileage down a bit. If cruising in the highway you will get more at 14 but in city expect 10-12 kmpl.
i20 Price and Our Verdict
The new i20 with the turbo is not cheap since there is more than a lakh difference between the i20 1.2l manual and the turbo iMT. The DCT Turbo that we have tested is even more expensive taking into account the extra price of the DCT automatic. The price of the DCT Asta(O) is Rs 11.1 lakh. Now that is expensive and that also makes it most expensive hatchback but in terms of performance plus features, the i20 Turbo is very good value. If you like driving plus want features and space but in a hatchback style design then the i20 Turbo is worth the extra price for the gearbox and the power that the turbo brings.
