Car Comparison - 2020 New Honda City vs Hyundai Verna

Hyundai launched the new Verna a few days back and now it’s arch-rival the new City is launching soon. We first disclosed that Honda is planning to launch the City as soon as lockdown gets lifted but since the lockdown was extended at the last minute, Honda had no option but to change plans yet again. Thus expect the new City to be here finally by June however with the new Verna already here, we thought we will give you a brief comparison between the two. Now do note that the new City has not been launched and complete details are not known so this is a preview and a proper comparo would be done post launch.
City vs Verna Dimensions
The new City has grown and in-fact compared to the one sold in Thailand there has been an extension of the wheelbase. In terms of length the new City is 4549mm while the new Verna is 4440mm. In terms of width the new City is 1748mm while the new Verna is 1729mm. In terms of height the new City is 1489mm while the new Verna is 1475mm. However both have the same wheelbase at 2600mm.
City vs Verna Engine and Gearbox
The new City will get a pair of 1.5 petrol and diesel engines. The newer engine is the 1.5l petrol with 121 bhp while the diesel will make 100 bhp. Gearbox options would be 5 and 6-speed manuals while a CVT automatic would also be expected to be there.
In terms of the Hyundai Verna you get three engine options. The Verna gets two petrols with the first engine being a 1.5l unit with 115 bhp while the 1.0 turbo makes 120 bhp. There is also a diesel with 1.5l and 115 bhp. The Verna gets a manual gearbox as standard but also gets a CVT with the 1.5l petrol plus a torque converter auto with the diesel while the turbo gets a DCT 7-speed. That’s three kinds of automatic gearbox options!
City vs Verna Features
Both of these cars are highly equipped thus you can get all of the expected features so here we discuss the most talked about ones. The new City is a lot more luxurious and well equipped over the current one. There is an 8inch touch-screen, LED headlights, Alexa remote, Honda connect, a G-meter like supercars, leather seats, sunroof, 6 airbags, TPMS, traction control etc.
The new Verna is also loaded with features as you would expect. You have an 8inch touch-screen here also with all the connectivity tech, sunroof, cooled glove-box, digital instrument cluster, hands-free boot opening, wireless phone charging, ESP, traction control, Blue link connectivity, TPMS, front parking sensors, rear disc brakes paddle-shifters, ventilated and cooled seats.
First Verdict
The new Verna has been completely changed and now currently looks to be the most feature packed sedan plus it offers the most with its engine plus gearbox options. The Verna thus looks like to be the best sedan on the market right now. So where does that leave the new Honda City? Well with the current City being sold, the new one would be more premium and have more features thus would be directly competing with the new Verna. The City has more space, bigger looks and its brand value as its advantage. It will be an interesting battle no doubt and we will bring you that when the new City gets finally launched.
