Hyundai have been very successful with their i20 and have sold a lot of them over the years particularly the current generation i20 since 2014. The premium hatchback space has since increased with the likes of the i20 and it was the first premium hatchback of sorts for the Indian market with increased space plus extra features which normally is seen on sedans. However now, Hyundai might be aiming to do the same with the i30 and go one step ahead.
The i30 as the name says is the flagship Hyundai hatchback and is placed above the i20. With the new i30, Hyundai will be aiming to introduce a new segment in the premium hatch space. The i30 is bigger than any hatchback in India being comfortably longer than 4m and actually being slightly smaller than a Honda City- which is a midsize sedan. Thus the i30 is long, low and quite sleek.
India will most likely get the facelifted version shown recently and it looks stunning with a new face especially with the sharp LED headlamps, bigger grille and the 17 inch wheels. The i30 is big but catches your attention with its looks. The sportier N line further does that with added aggressive details.
The interiors are actually of higher quality than many full size sedans sold here! The fit and finish is fantastic with a new look design including two key features : a new 7-inch digital cluster and a new 10.25-inch navigation touchscreen. There is also BlueLink and added safety features like Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) etc.
The space is different from what you expect from a normal hatchback as it is actually more like the Creta with a wide rear seat and very good amount of space.
In India we can expect the i30 to come with the same set of engines which the Creta and the Venue. By that we mean the 1.5l diesel and the 1.5l petrol plus the 1.0 turbo petrol with the choice of either a manual or 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
The i30 will not be cheap and we expect a starting price of Rs 10 lakh which means Hyundai will start a new segment for hatchbacks. Now a hatchback at Rs 12-13 lakh will be something different but the looks, features and driving experience will mean there are many who would want a premium experience but not in a sedan or SUV here Hyundai might taste success with the i30.
