One of the most important car segments in India, the Hatchback segment is segregated in ‘A’, ‘B1’ & ‘B2’ segments.
The ‘A’ segment includes cars like the Alto.
‘B1’ includes Wagon-R, Tiago, Santro, etc.
‘B2’ has Jazz, Elite i20, Baleno, Ignis, Swift and many more.
The top-selling hatchback and also the top-selling car of the August month is a ‘B2’ segment vehicle- Maruti Suzuki Swift.
As we know that the hatchback segment is dominated by Maruti Suzuki, it takes over 60,000 of the sales figure with its long line up that includes Swift, Baleno, Celerio, Ignis, Wagon-R and the Alto.
Another major chunk is held by Hyundai. Hyundai also has some great cars in the segment that offer great value for money proposition.
With people’s sentiment moving towards safety, Tata’s well-rated cars from the G-NCAP like the Tiago and Altroz can be seen with positive growth.
The Baleno is seeing a downgrade in the sales volume but its Toyota badged sibling- the Glanza, saw an increment in the sales figure.
The VW Polo with its new TSi motor is one of the fastest hatchbacks on sale in the country but not so fast in terms of sale.
Sales list of Midsize Sedans- AUGUST 2020
|Best Selling Sedan||July 2020||August 2020|
The competition between the Verna and the City is fascinating. Both of these brands offer good engines and a heavy feature list that attract a huge number of audience. Though it's the City’s long term legacy to dominate the segment but with the new Verna’s affordability and feature list, it also offers a great option to go for.
Coming ahead to the other vehicles, Yaris is also a good car with Toyota’s reliability and other utilitarian features. Though it fails to maintain its pace with the segment leaders, what we can see is a positive growth in the sales volume.
Other cars on the list include the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento & the Skoda Rapid which are not gaining sales thus a negative growth.
Sales list of Compact SUVs - AUGUST 2020
|Best Selling Compact SUV||July 2020||August 2020|
|Maruti Suzuki Brezza||7,807||6,903|
Maruti Suzuki Brezza now holds the second position for the month of August.
The introduction of the iMT and new Sport trim in the Hyundai Venue has made the car to hold the top spot in the Compact SUV segment. Hyundai sold over 8,267 units of the Venue making it the third most sold Hyundai after Grand i10 & Creta.
Another considerable progress in the segment is done by Tata Nexon.
The updated car that gets a sunroof, connected car features and some quirky tech like Hindi voice commands can be seen gaining popularity.
All other cars in the segment have shown positive growth compared to last month but the only car with a negative marking is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
Kia’s third offering in the Indian Car Market, the Sonet will sit in the compact SUV segment and the prices will be revealed on September 18.
The Magnite from Nissan also looks exciting in the teasers from the company and what it has to offer for its pricing would decide its position in the market.
Sales list of Compact Sedans- AUGUST 2020

|Maruti Suzuki Dzire||9,046||13,629|
Well, Maruti Suzuki Dzire again holds the top spot with sales reaching up to 13,629. The facelifted Dzire is updated with a new engine and Maruti Suzuki’s affordable service and maintenance have made the brand successful.
Other cars in the segment have also noted a significant increase considering the main utility of these cars- a compact body with ample boot carrying capacity.
The main USP of these cars being the extended boot over the hatchbacks naturally increases the price tag but you get more space adding up to a bigger car.
The sales of Ford Aspire are also increasing but the number is very less compared to its rivals.
Sales list of SUVs - AUGUST 2020
|Best Selling SUV||July 2020||August 2020|

The Midsize SUV segment has started to gain pace with over 20% growth compared to last month. Creta & Seltos can be seen doing extremely well with increasing sales number over the months.
The South Korean brands have managed to take away a huge set of the crowd with their SUVs. The 5 seater SUV segment is getting quite an attention due to the attractive cars being offered currently.
Tata Harrier, the best performer in terms of growth has recorded 72% of growth over the previous month. Selling over 1,600 units in August, the facelifted Harrier is surely entering the competition that is currently dominated by the Hyundai Creta.
Mahindra is also recovering from the slump with the help of Bolero. Though the homegrown brand managed to sell only one Alturas G4 last month, cars like XUV 300, Bolero & the Scorpio boosted the brand’s performance.
Sales list of Electric Vehicles - AUGUST 2020
|Best Selling Electric Vehicle||August 2020|
|Tata Nexon EV||296|
|Hyundai Kona EV||26|
|Tata Tigor EV||9|
The Indian Electric Vehicle market is about to flourish with ample amounts of charging stations not only in metropolitan cities but also in towns.
Currently, the EV infrastructure required to run these battery-packed vehicles is largely available in top tier cities enabling the potential customers to drive in an eco-friendly manner.
As the growth of charging infrastructure and economical new technologies are developing in the field of EVs, India will be a major market for the same.
For the month of August, Tata Nexon EV is the highest grosser by selling 296 units across the country, making it the most popular EV in India.
Other cars like the ZS-EV from MG and Hyundai Kona EV can be seen struggling due to their expensive price tag thus limited buyers.
Yet another car from Tata, the Tigor EV has sold 9 units in August so far. It seems that buyers are preferring the SUV bodied electric car over the sedan Tigor.
