2019 GLOBAL CAR SALES REPORT

The year 2019 indicated a slowdown with most carmakers around the globe registering a decline. The slowdown was quite evident especially in the Indian market where our very own Tata Motors and Mahindra took a sharp hit in the sales. As new challenges emerge ranging from fuel emissions, connected car technology, healthier and safer cars to transitioning to cleaner fuel and autonomous vehicles, companies are aligning their strategies with governments as well as consumer demand. Volkswagen Group, that owns brands like Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi attained the top position in global sales. It sold 10.98 million units in 2019 thereby registering 1 % growth over the previous year. On the other hand Toyota sold 10.74 million units leaving behind Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance. The Japanese car maker also registered 1% growth Y-O-Y.

The French-Japanese alliance stood third with 10.16 million units, registering a decline of 1.6%. the arrest of the group's former boss Carlos Ghosn may have played a part in the sales decline.

The overall sales of Suzuki globally stood at slightly more than 3 million, down 10% from the year before. Maruti Suzuki contributes half of the sales made by Suzuki globally. In India Maruti enjoys a market share of more than 50% and has been able to consistently hold its leadership.

Hyundai sold 4.43 million units worldwide, more than Kia's 2.77 million units. Kia has quickly established itself as the third best selling car brand in India, despite having only two products in its portfolio. It has left behind the Indian car makers Mahindra and Tata.

Mahindra's sales stood at 3.84 lakh units, registering a decline of 12%. It’s South Korean subsidiary, SsangYong sold 1,35,000 units. Tata motors sold 5.66lakh units, registering the sales decline of 23%, highest among all the global car makers. JLR, the luxury arm of Tata Motors too registered a 6% decline, selling 5.58 lakh units.

The American car maker, General Motors (GM) which exited India last year sold nearly 7.72 million units while Ford sold nearly 5.39 units, both registering a decline.

FCA, which owns brands such as Jeep and Fiat sold 4.42 million units. Fiat has exited the Indian market and now focuses solely on Jeep.

Honda too is having a rough period in the Indian car market while globally it has been doing well, selling 5.17 million units.

Another Japanese car company, Mitsubishi, which seems to have vanished from our markets have sold 1.13 million units. It has a good customer base for its SUVs in countries like Japan, North America and Australia.
