Suspension of Drink and Drive Test

The Coronavirus, COVID-19 was initially discovered in Wuhan, China. With the patient ‘X’ being first reported on 31st December 2019, the outbreak has grown severely over the past few months. So far the virus has reached most of the countries with severe effects on the overall health and economy, turning this into a pandemic. The virus has affected over 3.08 lakh people with total deaths of over 13,000 deaths worldwide. Currently the virus is affecting most in the countries, China, Italy, USA, Spain, Germany, Iran and rest of Europe.
How infectious is the virus?
Coronavirus is a droplet infection and it is spread by sneezing and touch. Covid-19 virus will stay on a surface from 12 hrs to upto 3 days. Especially on plastic and steel, the duration of activity of such viruses is highest. The virus does not die due to spike in temperature and will only be killed at a temperature above 50 degree Celsius.
Prevention against the virus
The best way to prevent the COVID-19 spread is by isolation, social distancing, quarantining and extreme hygiene habits. Human to human touch is the cause of the spread and preventing it is the only choice we have. The WHO has advised people to repeatedly wash hands for 20 whole seconds. The outer layer of a virus that is made up of essentially fats or protein can be broken down by simple soap (anti-bacterial isn’t really necessary) but one has to wash their hands for 20 seconds minimum to completely get rid of that virus. Hand sanitizers work as well.
So far, in India, more than 300 people are affected by this virus with a total of 6 deaths, and with worldwide treats being so high, the government has taken some extreme measures to avoid the further spread. One of the measures taken by almost every state in India is the suspension of drunk driving tests.
Why suspend drunk driving test?
The test demands a breath analysis that could also help spread the disease and to prevent it, the test will be suspended till the situation gets normal. Police personnel are also vulnerable to the infection because they have to place the breath-analyser apparatus into the mouth of motorists and drivers to check whether they are driving drunk. With the near-lockdown situation in the country, the number of drunk drivers are expected to reduce as well.
During this time of crisis and lockdown, police are one of the key personnel to keep the order and peace. To make sure they stay safe, few necessary actions should be taken. The suspension of the test has been appreciated by all, hoping for the crisis to pass as soon as possible.
