Car Review : Altroz Diesel

The Tata Altroz has been the biggest launch from Tata Motors this year and is a big step up from its previous premium hatchbacks. By that we talk about the Bolt but forget that as the Atroz is an impressive effort especially the diesel which we think is the best diesel hatchback in India right now.
Should you buy diesel cars in India?
Diesel is still having its fair share of customers and the fact that if you do a lot of driving then it does make sense plus for those who do outstation trips every now and then the efficiency/ range of a diesel is something which is a big USP. However most car-makers have abandoned diesel altogether except Tata Motors who has a BS6 diesel in the Altroz.
Now while deliveries of the diesel BS6 Altroz did not start immediately due to availability of BS6 fuel, post lockdown restrictions being lifted, we can expect the diesel Altroz to start being delivered. Question is should you buy? Well we drove the diesel one to tell you why you should.
Altroz Diesel Specifications
The Altroz diesel gets a 1.5l four cylinder diesel with 90 bhp and 200Nm. There is only a 5-speed manual being offered with the diesel as standard. First impressions are that this BS6 unit is refined and the 5-speed manual is not heavy to use plus same for the clutch. For a diesel manual, the controls are fairly light.
In the city there is enough power to keep you away from shifting gears all the time and you can use the strong torque here. The power delivery is linear and once past 2,000 rpm the diesel Altroz moves in quicker plus when presented with an open road is when you appreciate the Altroz diesel the most.
Power does not taper off and neither does it come in one big rush nor is there heavy amounts of turbo lag. Instead build up is quick but linear and the Altroz diesel goes for serious triple digit speeds with no fuss. Add in the sense of solidity plus toughness at high speeds over its lighter feeling rivals and the Altroz diesel is the hatchback to drive on the highways for large distances.
Altroz Diesel Mileage
The diesel is heavier over the petrol but that makes the Altroz have a more direct steering and handling seems better along with stability mentioned earlier. Expect good mileage figures too and while we are yet to test it ourselves, the official figure is 25 kmpl plus.
Prices start at Rs 6.99 lakh for the base diesel while it goes all the way to Rs 9.3 lakh for the top-end. For a diesel the Altroz is one of the best options you have at this price point. It looks good and is fairly well equipped while the diesel more importantly gives good performance. With hardly any rivals, the Altroz diesel pretty much owns this small segment to itself.
