KIA Sonet Diesel vs Petrol - Engine and Performance Compared

KIA Sonet Diesel and Petrol - Engine, Fuel Economy and Performance Comparison Review
So which KIA Sonet to buy, diesel or petrol? KIA just like Hyundai has also fitted its new compact SUV with a 1.5l diesel engine. Also KIA offers you not one but two petrol engines. While the differences between fuel prices are lowered, there is a need to take into the driving characteristics between the Sonet diesel and petrol.
Engine and Performance
The 1.2l petrol is the base variant that makes 83 bhp and 115Nm. It only gets a 5-speed manual and it is for those who cannot stretch their budget to a bigger version Sonet else the 1.0 turbo is the better bet. The Turbo despite being a 3 cylinder makes more power and torque with 120 bhp and 172Nm plus it is quicker and more enjoyable.
But how is the 1.0 turbo petrol when compared to the 1.5l diesel? The diesel makes less power at 100 bhp but more torque at 240Nm. It gets a proper manual gearbox and not an iMT like the Sonet turbo petrol. That said you can also get the 6-speed AT in the diesel.
The diesel has more torque hence in the highways is more fun due to the smoother performance. The diesel is also very silent plus automatic simply works. The turbo petrol cannot match the diesel torque but is more fun in the way the petrol engine performs and also since the petrol Sonet is lighter, it feels more agile around corners.
Fuel Economy
The petrol 1.2 Sonet gives 18.4 kmpl while the Turbo petrol gives 18.2 kmpl. The diesel Sonet gives 24.1 kmpl and 19 kmpl for the auto.
Thus buy the diesel if you do more than 50 kms a day and drive a lot over weekends as that is where you recover the cost and mileage advantage. Also in some cities like Delhi, petrol makes more sense where you can keep a petrol car upto 15 years and a diesel only till 5 years.
Which one to buy?
Our advice is that the turbo petrol Sonet 1.0 is the best one to buy under current circumstances. It is efficient and also good to drive. We have already said between the 1.2l petrol and 1.0 turbo, we choose the turbo. Between the diesel and turbo petrol we also choose the turbo petrol unless you drive a lot and need the diesel torque or do a lot of highway runs or road trips which require diesel.
