New Hyundai Creta Buyers Prefer Diesel

Ever since its launch the Hyundai Creta in its new generation form has taken over the segment as the best-selling car. However in the month of May it was the best-selling car in India itself and that goes to show the level of popularity that the Creta has in India.
Currently the Creta has around 30,000 bookings while interestingly around 55 percent of those is for the diesel version. In this article we will discuss exactly that.
Creta Diesel is more popular
In the times when some car-makers have abandoned diesel, here is the new Creta having more than half of its sales for the diesel engine. That changes the fact that diesel would not be successful post BS6. It was believed that diesel would run out of favour as post BS6 the prices of diesel cars would increase and also increase the gap in prices between petrol and diesel.
That has not happened at all and the price difference has stayed the same. For the Creta the base diesel and petrol are actually the same price at Rs 9.9 lakh while it is from the S trim onwards that there is a difference of a lakh between the petrol and diesel Creta. So BS6 has not increased the difference as it was earlier thought to be, hence why diesel is so popular.
Positives of Diesel
Diesel continues to be popular because after BS6 the diesel engine is much cleaner and has adapted to the tougher norms. What it means is that the Creta with its BS6 diesel 1.5 is much cleaner than the previous Creta 1.6 diesel plus more refined and having good performance. However the advantage of a diesel remains, which is the mileage and the range that a diesel gives you. The Creta for example in its diesel form will give over 21 kmpl. That means a petrol car cannot match the mileage of a diesel no matter how hard you try.
SUVs Suited for Diesel
Another reason why the Creta in its diesel trim has been hugely successful is that SUVs and diesel go hand in hand. By that we mean the Creta is an SUV and an SUV works best with a diesel. A diesel engine has more torque over the petrol and that gives the SUV a better cruising ability. SUV buyers also like road-trips and use their car more thus a diesel is more suited as the torque on offer gives you the pulling power.
Verdict
The fact that diesel is still popular and relevant is shown with the new Creta bookings as it reinforces the notion that diesel is here to stay. Plus in BS6 form it is a much better deal while retaining all the positives. While petrol is still the more popular fuel option overall; in terms of SUVs, diesel is still the preferred choice.
