New Hyundai Verna 1.5 Petrol Mileage Test

Hyundai is back at the midsize space with its new Verna and do not mistake it for a mere facelift. There are a lot of changes which we have talked about in the past in our first look here. In this article we will talk about the new Verna and its real world city mileage. In these days with fuel prices being what they are, knowing how much a car gives in terms of mileage in the real world is very important.
Hyundai Verna 1.5 Petrol
For this test we chose the 1.5l petrol which is an entry-level engine in all of the Hyundai flagship cars like the Verna here and the Creta. This engine makes 114 bhp and 144Nm of torque. Those are healthy numbers plus the Verna is lighter being a sedan, the performance is very good. The engine is a change from the old pre-BS6 1.6 petrol which used to power the Verna and some other Hyundai cars earlier. This new engine is much smoother and refined while in the city, it does not feel lacking in power with a better-bottom end response over the earlier engine. In the manual you would not need to shift down often in the city while in the CVT, the 1.5l feels quick and effortless to use. However we are here to discuss the mileage in the city and highway of the 1.5l CVT petrol so here goes.
Real World Mileage
The ARAI figure is 18.45 kmpl for the CVT is actually more than the 17.7 kmpl for the manual 1.5l petrol. Now the car we had was a brand new car with very few kms but the figures we got was hovering around 10-12 kmpl. This was the CVT and a lot depends on the way you drive. If you push hard and rev it to get more performance the mileage will fall down to 8-9 kmpl.
The key to get the best out of a CVT automatic is that you have to be steady on the throttle and it will deliver good mileage numbers- more than a torque converter automatic or a dual clutch. The Verna 1.5l does not get paddle shifters like on the Verna turbo and for manual shifting you have to use the gear lever but doing that reduces the mileage as you hang onto gears longer. It is best used for when you need that instant performance only.
On the highway with a light foot you will inch closer to the ARAI figure (15-16 kmpl) while overall driving smoothly will give you 10-12 kmpl in the city. When driven carefully in the city, a CVT like the Verna makes a lot of sense so ultimately it depends on how you drive. For an automatic the Verna is quite efficient and is along the class standard.
