Mahindra Thar Comparison Review : Petrol Vs Diesel

New Mahindra Thar Petrol vs Diesel Comparison Review - Mileage, Peformance
Should you buy the petrol Thar or diesel Thar? That is the question that many potential buyers of the Thar will ask. Most probably mileage will never the biggest factor when buying the new Mahindra Thar since this is a car that is more of an emotional purchase more than anything else. The new Thar is all about the lifestyle element and the looks plus appeal is the reason you would buy the Thar not the mileage. That said with Mahindra changing the new Thar to a huge extent and its on-road performance being more important, many owners will have the new Thar as their only car so mileage is important. Hence we drove the new Thar for some mild off-road session and in city driving with an aggressive throttle to see the performance. Plus of course we drove it in normal traffic to see how the new Thar performs mileage wise. Take a look.
Performance, Mileage - Petrol Thar First Drive Review
Mahindra has given new engines in the new Thar and it will also come down to the future Mahindra cars like the new XUV500 and more. We will start with the BS-6 compliant 2.0L Turbo Charged Direct Injection Petrol Engine. It is called as mStallion 150 and makes 150 bhp and 320Nm. This is an all aluminium engine while the fact that the new Thar has a petrol will bring more buyers. To drive the new Thar petrol feels more energetic and fun than the diesel with plenty of power. The automatic torque converter also fits in with a reasonably sharp response time. With the new petrol, the Thar feels direct and but the mileage also goes with the power. The big turbo petrol with the weight and automatic, makes for not so good mileage numbers. So if you do not care for mileage the new Thar would be good else it would be single digits at 7-8 kmpl at best or more if driven slowly.
Performance, Mileage - Diesel Thar First Drive Review
The diesel is the more practical choice with better fuel economy. The diesel automatic will give 10 or more when driven normally or when an off-road session was done along with a performance run, the new Thar gave around 9 kmpl in the diesel auto form. The diesel in the new Thar is a All-Aluminum 2.2L Turbo Diesel Four-Cylinder engine which is called Generation mHawk 130. It makes less power than the turbo petrol but it is still good for 130 bhp and 300Nm. First thing that you would notice is that the diesel is among the more refined units that we have seen from this car-maker. Compared to BS4 engines, this deisel is much better in refinement. To drive the diesel is explosive and fun but has more low-end torque and you can cruise better. You tend to drive the diesel Thar less enthusiastically than the petrol. For relaxed driving on highway the diesel automatic Thar is best choice. Over the manual too as though the manual Thar has a light clutch but for ease of use the automatic is the best bet. For off-roading the diesel Thar is also better suited with the added torque benefit and of course the diesel drinks less which means you can go further without fuel stops.
Verdict- Petrol or Diesel Thar?
Buy the petrol Thar if you want a lifestyle car with occasional trips and not much off-roading. Plus in Delhi NCR a petrol makes more sense. The petrol engine is also more fun but less efficient. However for those who will not do long trips or hardcore off-roading the petrol makes sense. The diesel would be preferred by those who do regular off-roading and go for long trips or drive their Thar’s a lot to justify the diesel. Choose accordingly.
