Mahindra is readying the new generation Mahindra Thar for a launch in August with cars being ready to be dispatched to the showrooms. The new Thar is based on an all new chassis and is much bigger than the previous one. The earlier Thar lacked features which the new generation version will have including a touchscreen plus even a rear camera plus sensors and airbags. With new norms, the next gen Thar will have the necessary standard equipment like speed warning etc. Expect also smartphone connectivity in the form of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In terms of space the new Thar would be much more comfortable with added space now so practicality is also improved.
The new Thar would be safer, better to drive and of course will have a BS6 line-up of diesel and petrol engines. At the launch the new Thar would only come with a manual gearbox though we can expect an automatic later. The manual would be a 6-speed one plus of course off-road hardware would be there. The 2.2 diesel is BS6 and upgraded plus will have 140 bhp. There will be a petrol as said earlier and it will be a line-up of the new 2.0 turbo petrol called mStallion. The petrol version will no doubt increase sales and expand the owner base.
The new Thar is bigger and will come with bigger wheels plus the styling would be more aggressive but still keeping the original Thar DNA intact. As shown in the image the new Thar is having 18 inch wheels and that gives it a bigger stance over the earlier one. The new Thar will come with a hardtop also as seen in the picture plus you can see the bigger wheels and size. The new Thar would be expected to be more expensive but it is one of the most awaited new SUVs.
Also do note that the Thar will compete with the Suzuki Jimny which is also coming this year. Thus for off-road enthusiasts it is good news. Coronavirus impact has affected the time-line of the new Thar launch but with lockdown being lifted from various parts from end of May, August is a perfect date. Mahindra will have a busy next year also as it will be launching the new XUV500 and the new Scorpio. At the Auto Expo, Mahindra did not show the Thar but showed a new design concept.
