Shown at the Auto Expo, the Tata HBX holds a lot of promise for the Indian market. Here is a sub compact SUV that would be positioned below the Nexon. What we saw at the Auto Expo was 90 percent close to the production spec and that's exciting as it will open a new segment of a smaller compact SUV. Here in this article we will talk about the HBX and how it would be priced.
When will HBX be launched?
We expect the HBX to be launched at the next financial year and that means it is a few months away. The Coronavirus might have delayed the plans but the launch schedule seems largely on track. This year has been busy for Tata Motors with the Altroz plus the Harrier automatic but the HBX is easily the most important model yet from Tata Motors.
What price-range can we expect from the HBX?
The Nexon is a compact SUV but the HBX would be much below that and more priced in line with the Tiago. Thus we expect aggressive pricing, making the HBX the most affordable SUV in India. In terms of a price range the HBX would be expected to start from below the Rs 5 or even below Rs 4.75 lakh ex-showroom and that puts it at the affordable end of cars. The top-end trims would be priced just below the Rs 8 lakh bracket- that makes it cheaper than many hatchbacks! The pricing would be crucial and the HBX would be the most affordable Tata SUV for sure!
Will it have enough features?
Yes, the HBX production spec will not be lacking features as we can expect it to be as well equipped as the Tata Tiago. The design would be as attractive as the concept, especially with the way the headlamps plus the DRL is divided while it would also have a skid plate and roof-rails. The tyres may not be the off-road ones seen here though as it would be standard road tyres with 15 inch alloys. Inside it would have the part-digital instrument cluster, touch-screen infotainment system along with all the usual features plus climate control etc. In terms of engines it would be petrol only (1.2 ) though we can expect both manual as well as an AMT automatic being on the cards.
What cars it will compete with?
The HBX would compete with the Mahindra KUV100 and the Maruti Ignis. However the HBX is bigger and is expected to be more spacious too. Plus in terms of styling we think the HBX looks much more attractive also! The KUV as a result of its styling has not done well in our market and the Ignis is also only a niche segment player due to its looks though the recent facelift has helped matters somewhat. The HBX would change that and give car-buyers an option of having an SUV at the price of an entry-level hatch! Stay tuned for more on this new mini Tata SUV!
