Toyota Urban Cruiser Automatic Petrol Review, Mileage - 2021

Toyota Urban Cruiser Automatic Petrol SUV Price in India 2021 - Check Design, Review, Mileage & Features Update
2020 has seen many new cars coming but the most action has been seen in the compact SUV segment where we have seen various launches from time to time. Now Toyota has been absent from the budget end of the segment when it stopped making its Etios and Etios Liva cars. Hence a quick solution was obviously accessing the Maruti range of cars. Under the agreement, Toyota would sell Maruti cars with some changes and that is what the Urban Cruiser is. A changed Maruti Brezza but it also has some good points as we will discuss.
How does it Look?
As you can see, Toyota has done some updates to the design to make the Urban Cruiser look different from the Vitara Brezza. The changes are mostly concentrated at the front where the Urban Cruiser gets a different grille with a different two chrome slat design. Even the entire front bumper is changed from the Brezza and it gives the Urban Cruiser its own identity. The design is nice and it looks like a proper SUV. The rear LED combination lamps are the same and also the 16-inch diamond-cut alloys though at the rear there is no badging as an extra to make out what variant this is. It also has grey metal roof rails while the Urban Cruiser has a dual-tone exterior including a new brown colour.
What about the Interior?
The interior is similar to the Brezza of course including the raised centre console and also the square-like design which is given to make the interior look similar to the exterior. The dials with the changing colour option are also there while the driving position is very SUV like. One change is the new brown dual-tone look which is different from the Brezza which has a silver/black look to it. The Urban Cruiser with its brown seats looks more plush and also there is the same treatment given to the door pads.
Space is excellent like the Brezza while the seats are comfortable too. The Urban Cruiser feels spacious and airy inside while the brown look further makes it more comfortable. Three passengers can also easily sit in the Urban Cruiser with an ample width.
What about Features?
The feature list of the Urban Cruiser is less than a Kia Sonet or even a Nexon, EcoSport, Magnite, and more. It does not get various features like a sunroof, rear ac vents, wireless charging, connected car technology, side/curtain airbags, and a fully digital instrument cluster amongst various others. That is a big negative.
It does get the basics like a 7inch touch screen which has the smartphone connect availability, smartphone-based navigation, cruise control, climate control, driver seat height adjust, cooled glove box, rear camera with parking sensors, electric mirrors, dual airbags with ABS/EBD, LED projector headlamps, start/stop system.
How does it Drive?
Just like the Maruti Brezza, you get a K-Series 1.5 L, 4 Cylinder petrol engine which makes 105 bhp and 138Nm. You can either choose a 5-speed manual or get a 4-speed torque converter automatic. There is no diesel and also no turbo petrol but the automatic Urban Cruiser does get a mild hybrid system which has an integrated starter motor and a lithium-ion battery which saves fuel via a start/stop function and also makes a smoother drive via a torque-assist function.
Just like the Brezza petrol, the Urban Cruiser petrol is a fun to drive SUV and is also smooth to use in the city or on the highway. The refinement at low speeds is very good and the car also feels fast just like the turbo Venue or Sonet. The 5-speed manual is the better to drive version but the automatic one is easier to drive due to the convenience it gives. As a city SUV, you will love the driving position and the easy to use gearbox/engine. When driven fast on the highway it lacks the power delivery of turbo petrol while the automatic feels slower due to having only 4-speeds. You can hold the gearbox to go only in lower gears but that said it is not as fun as a Venue DCT or Sonet DCT. Where it scores is the ride quality as the car absorbs bumps and bad roads very well.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Mileage?
Thanks to mild-hybrid tech the automatic is more efficient over the manual at 18.76 kmpl for the AT and 17.03 kmpl for the MT.
Should you Buy it?
The petrol manual Urban Cruiser is starting at Rs 8.4 lakh while the top-end AT petrol here is Rs 11.3 lakh. To make it a better deal over the Brezza, the Urban Cruiser also gets a warranty of 3 years or 1 lakh km, whichever comes earlier. Hence while it lacks features or even the technology of its rivals, the Urban Cruiser has a better ride quality, more space, and more efficiency. Hence for those who require this more, this is the choice and also we would prefer this over the Brezza.
