Upcoming Tata HBX vs Nexon - Comparison Review

2020 Tata HBX Micro-SUV vs Nexon Compact SUV - Side by Side Comparison
The Nexon has been a game-changer of sorts for Tata Motors as ever since it was launched, it has been doing consistently well plus the recent update that Tata has given it also makes it a stronger contender. The Nexon has been the first compact SUV for Tata in India but it believes there is space for another one below and that is where the HBX comes in. The HBX was shown at the Auto Expo and it was also shown in near production ready form which means that the launch is only a few months away. So should you wait for the HBX to come early next year or buy the Nexon now and what is the big difference between the two? Let us find out.
HBX vs Nexon Exterior: Design and Dimension

Both the HBX and the Nexon share some similar styling elements with having the same design language. That said the HBX looks more like a mini Harrier with the small DRLs and headlamps being on the lower part of the bumper much like the Harrier. The Nexon is more conventional but the recent design change has made its styling closer to the new look Tata design language. Both have roof-rails, cladding and skid plates though the shorter HBX has a crossover look with the rear sloping while the Nexon is obviously longer and wide. Curiously the HBX has more height and its wheelbase is nearly the same as the bigger Nexon. The HBX will also have smaller alloys in form of 15 inch wheels in place of the 16 inch ones.
HBX vs Nexon Interior: Space, Features
The biggest difference is on the inside as both have a different interior design and look. The Nexon has the more premium cabin and quality seems better. We spent some time with the HBX at the Auto Expo and the cabin was more basic than the Nexon but the design was rugged and different. The Nexon has more premium materials and different layers used inside. The HBX gets a more rugged look while instead of full digital dials of the Nexon, the HBX will get part digital dials seen on the Tata Altroz also. While the Nexon gets premium features like a top of the line audio system and a sunroof plus the Tata connected car tech amongst others, the HBX would get a smaller version of the same connected car tech plus it would have basic features like the climate control, touch-screen, steering controls etc. In terms of space the legroom in HBX is very good and nearly as good as the Nexon but it is on the width where the Nexon scores.
HBX vs Nexon Specs: Engine and Transmissions
In terms of engines while specs are not confirmed obviously for the HBX, we do know that the HBX would come with a 5-speed manual and a 1.2l petrol at the start. It would be the same one found in the Tiago. We will expect an AMT version coming in later and Tata might surprise us by giving the HBX some kind of off-road mode as well like the Harrier to make it an USP. The Nexon has much bigger engines in form of the 1.2l turbo petrol which recently got a power hike and the diesel. The Nexon currently offers an AMT gearbox as an option also. Another difference is that the Nexon would offer proper drive modes which alter performance and it is currently only limited to the more premium Tata cars like the Nexon.

HBX vs Nexon: Launch, Price, Verdict
The Nexon starts at Rs 7 lakh and goes till Rs 12.7 lakh. Now the HBX in its production version will be much cheaper of course and its pricing would be similar to the Tiago or Altroz. As we have reported earlier the HBX would be its most affordable SUV on its launch in Oct,2020 and might be the cheapest SUV in India with a price of Rs 5 lakh starting and going to Rs 8 lakh for the top-end. The Nexon is for those who want the performance, styling and features along with a bigger SUV for the family. The HBX is for those who want a micro SUV with a good combination of features and rugged styling for daily commute
