Over 1.21 Lakh New Creta SUVs Sold - Why is it so Popular in India?
The new generation Hyundai Creta was launched right at the start of the pandemic and the lockdown but that did not stop this SUV from selling over 1.21 lakh units in sales in just one year. The previous generation Creta was a big hit for Hyundai but this new generation model has taken things to an altogether new level. The new Creta is based on a new platform and gets a lot of engine options plus variants- crucial factors which have contributed to its sales success. Plus the new generation model has made its debut with features such as a massive panoramic sunroof plus connected technology and more. The fact that it has cooled and ventilated seats along with paddle shifters means that the Creta caters to a wide audience.
The size of the Creta and the price plus positioning also has contributed to its sales. In February 2021, the Creta was the 5th largest selling car in India and that for a model costing above Rs 10 lakh is unreal. It has sold between 10,000/12,000 units a month on a regular and currently has a long waiting list. Interestingly over 50 percent of sales are for the higher spec SX & SX(O) trims while even more interesting is that diesel accounts for over 60 percent of its sales. Plus over 20 percent sales of the Creta are also for the automatic version.
The diesel bit is interesting as many other car makers have abandoned diesel altogether but the Creta suggests that a modern diesel gives the fuel economy and range that a petrol cannot. Also helping is top-end diesel and turbo petrol automatics are priced nearly the same. Currently you can get the Creta with three engine options with automatic gearboxes being offered with all engines. There is a 1.5 l MPi Petrol (6MT/ IVT), 1.5 l U2 CRDi Diesel (6MT/ 6AT) and the 1.4 l Kappa Turbo GDi Petrol (7DCT). Hence, despite competition the Creta outsells everything even including its Venue smaller brother. The upcoming Alcazar three-row SUV based on this SUV will only increase the overall popularity of this SUV brand even further.
The new Creta is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 17.5 lakh ex-showroom and despite new competition coming in, the Creta seems all set to continue its golden run in India.
