2020 New Nexon Detailed Expert Review - Most Affordable & Value for Money SUV?
Tata earlier this year launched the new Nexon SUV in order to fight the likes of the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 amongst others. Now there is news of the new Kia Sonet coming in also so the question is whether you should buy the Tata Nexon in its new avatar or not and to find out we have the facelift Nexon here in its new petrol engine variant. Read our first drive review below.
Nexon 2020 Looks
The new Nexon is a good looking SUV and the facelift changes a lot of the design of the previous Nexon. The new Nexon gets a new front-end which makes the car look wider and more SUV like. It gets slimmer headlamps and a new grille along with a new bumper. You can also see the unique in the lower part of the bumper which makes it further stand out. There is also a skid plate and a healthy amount of cladding here while some details like unique fog-lamp surrounds look good. The rear sees the inclusion of new bumper and some updates while the tail-lamps have new added detailing in them. It looks bigger now and more appealing.
Nexon 2020 Interiors
The interiors of the new Nexon sport a new look steering wheel which is better to look at and hold. There is also a digital instrument cluster which replaces the old one while the rest of the cabin is the same. The instrument cluster is new and features a large screen for all the information and looks futuristic. The cabin quality is improved as well while the touchscreen is same size along with the centre console storage place.
Nexon 2020 Features
Here is the biggest change as to counter the Hyundai Venue and the Mahindra XUV300, Tata has given the new Nexon a healthy dose of features. To start with you get auto fold ORVMs, cruise control, digital instrument cluster, cooled glove-box, touchscreen with all the smartphone connectivity, rear view camera and more. The big additions are the sunroof, Harman audio system, connected car tech including Geofence, a natural voice command system, tyre pressure monitoring system, Xpress Cool fast cooling, ESP, traction control, roll-over mitigation etc. Some things that we noticed in the new Nexon during our review were a slightly better touchscreen and even the rear view camera is better while the audio system continues to be a superb unit.
Nexon 2020 Safety
The Tata Nexon scored a 5-star safety rating in the Global NCAP tests and is among the safest compact SUV available in India.
Nexon 2020 Drive Experience
The 1.2l turbo petrol now makes more power at 120 bhp and 170Nm. We had the petrol manual which is a 6-speed one while it continues to have the three drive modes. The petrol Nexon now feels more refined and the power delivery is smoother too. The manual is also nice to use while the clutch is lighter. The earlier Nexon petrol had some lag and the power delivery was not smooth but now the power delivery at low revs is better plus turbo-lag is a lot removed. Put it in the Sport mode and the Nexon gets a muscular mid-range which makes it fun to drive. It feels stable at highways too while in the city it feels nimble while also having the SUV feel. The mileage will depend on your driving but you will get low tens if careful in the city.
Compact SUV Value for Money Price Comparison
Tata Nexon (Petrol & Diesel) - Rs 6.95 - Rs 12.70 lakh
Hyundai Venue (Petrol & Diesel) - Rs 6.70 - Rs 11.50 lakh
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (Petrol) - Rs 7.34 - Rs 11.40 lakh
Ford Ecosport (Petrol & Diesel)- Rs 8.04 - Rs 11.58 lakh
Mahindra XUV 300 (Petrol & Diesel) - Rs 8.30 - Rs 12.69 lakh
KIA Sonet (Petrol & Diesel) - Rs 8 - Rs 12 lakh (expected)
Is the new Nexon worth the money?
This top-end petrol manual is Rs 10.5 lakh while there is also an AMT petrol automatic while there is also a BS6 diesel as well. We feel the turbo petrol manual is a very good option over the AMT due to the manual gearbox being light enough to use. The new Nexon looks better and more premium but the new interior plus added features also makes it up-to date with the competition. The new Nexon compared to rivals looks good and bigger while it also feels good to drive but the safety aspect and good value makes this a strong buy. Possibly the best Indian SUV out there.
