BS6 Compliant Vehicles to Display a Green Sticker

The BS6 compliant vehicles which were made mandatory for sale after 1st April 2020 will receive a new sticker on its third number plate. The third number plate of BS6 compliant vehicles will now feature 1 cm wide, thin green stripe at the top of the third registration plate.

The government had issued all motor vehicles to be fitted with tamper-proof, high-security registration plates (HSRP) from April 1, 2019. Each newly manufactured unit will now receive an HSRP or third number plate fitted on the inside of the windshield. The order was issued amending the motor vehicle order of 2018.

The HSRP will contain a chromium-based hologram implemented by hot stamping on the top left corner of the number plates of both front and back sides. The green hologram will consist of laser-branding of a permanent identification number minimum of 10 digits into the reflective sheeting on the bottom left of the registration plate. The green stripe will be especially used for colour coding, differentiating the BS6 from the rest.

The colour coding will continue further, classifying what type of fuel is being used in the vehicle and will be used to detect polluting vehicles from the less polluting ones. With extremely strict emission norms of BS6 engines, other countries have also come forward demanding separate identification for the BS6 compliant vehicles.

A Road Transport and Highways Ministry official said, "Accordingly, a feature in form of a unique strip of green colour of 1 cm wide on top of the existing third registration sticker for the purpose of BS-VI vehicles of any fuel type i.e. For petrol or CNG, which have a light blue colour sticker and a diesel vehicle which is of orange colour sticker, will have a green strip of 1 CM on top that has been mandated."
