Comparison: Skoda Karoq vs Jeep Compass vs Volkswagen T-Roc
Recently Skoda launched the much-awaited Karoq in the Indian market through its first-ever virtual conference. With this, there is a new addition to the mid-size SUV segment and it goes ahead to lock its horns with the Jeep Compass and its cousin the Volkswagen T-Roc. Hence to clear your doubts and help you choose between the three, we get to you the spec comparison between the Skoda Karoq, Jeep Compass the Volkswagen T-Roc
Comparing the dimensions amongst the rivals of the Skoda Karoq, the Jeep Compass is the longest and the tallest of them all. Hence the road presence of the Compass is felt. On the other hand, the Skoda Karoq, when compared to the Compass, is 3mm shorter in length and is short by 16mm in height. But overall the Karoq is the widest of them all and it also has the longest wheelbase, thus ensuring that the cabin is much roomier. Coming to the Volkswagen T-Roc, it is the smallest of them all in terms of size although the width is 1mm more than that of the Compass. Overall, the dimensions of the T-Roc is on the smaller side when compared to the rivals but when it comes to practicality it has an upper hand over the Jeep Compass as it has a larger boot space and is lighter by almost 271kgs.
Looking at safety features, the Skoda Karoq has the upper hand with 9 airbags for the Driver, Front Passenger, 2 Curtain, Driver Knee, Driver Side, Front Passenger Side, 2 Rear Passenger Sides. The Volkswagen T-ROC also has similar safety features just like the Karoq, but it comes equipped with only 6 airbags for the Driver, Front Passenger, 2 Curtain, Driver Side, Front Passenger Sides. On the other hand, the top petrol variant of the Jeep Compass gets 6 airbags and it does miss out on the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and the lower variant just gets 2 airbags.
In this comparison, only the Jeep Compass comes with both the options of petrol and diesel engines along with transmission options to choose from. Whereas the Skoda Karoq and the Volkswagen T-ROC are powered with similar petrol engine and transmission. The below table showcases the comparison between petrol engines only.
Both the Skoda Karoq and the Volkswagen T-ROC are powered with a 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine that produces 148 bhp of power and 250Nm of twist and it comes mated to a 7-speed Dual Clutch Automatic gearbox. On the other hand, Jeep powers the Compass (Petrol) with a smaller 1.4-litre Turbo petrol mill that churns out 160 bhp of power and 250 Nm of twist. This engine comes with an option of a 6-speed manual and 7-speed Dual Clutch Automatic transmission to choose from.
Although the Compass has a smaller petrol engine, it is powerful amongst all. Also when comparing the T-Roc and the Karoq with the similar power figures it will all come down to the weight. As the Karoq is lighter by 30kg it will have the upper hand in terms of power to ratio.
The Jeep Compass, on the other hand, is the only model to be offered with a diesel engine option. Under the hood is a 2.0L MultiJet Turbo diesel engine which generates 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Along with the 6-speed manual and 7-speed Dual Clutch Automatic gearbox, it also gets the option for an AWD drivetrain.
Amongst the three, the Skoda Karoq is the costliest, as it is being fully imported into the nation, hence facing heavy taxation and duties. Also, it comes loaded with all the latest technology and creature comfort features. Behind it is the Volkswagen T-Roc which is also a full-import model, but due to the difference in between the features and equipment, it is cheaper by almost Rs 5 lakh.
Last but not least is the Jeep Compass, it is the only model to be offered with options of trim levels to choose from. It starts from Rs 16.49 lakh and the top-spec Limited Plus petrol variant goes up to Rs 21.92 lakh which still costs less by Rs 3 lakh when compared to the Karoq.
If you’re looking out for smaller SUV or something that stands out of the crowd in terms of design and which is loaded with ample of features that suits your needs, the Volkswagen T-Roc is the one to go for. The Skoda Karoq, on the other hand, is that mid-size SUV which gets all the road presence along with a good level of equipment and better safety features but it does come with an additional cost. Although the Jeep Compass is cheaper you get many options which ranges from powertrains to different trim levels.
