With the wraps finally taken off the 2020 Thar, Mahindra will be launching this SUV on the 2nd of October 2020. Force Motors, on the other hand, revealed the 2020 Gurkha at the latest Auto Expo and since then it has been spotted testing. The Mahindra Thar has always locked its horns with the Force Gurkha and hence we at MyNewcar get to you a detailed spec comparison of the 2020 Thar with the upcoming Gurkha
New Thar Vs Force Gurkha Exterior Comparison
Mahindra has worked extensively in terms of design and aesthetics by making the new Thar look very modern but it has also retained its classic design. The Indian auto manufacturer continues to offer the 2020 Thar with a boxy silhouette and round halogen headlight setup. Coming to the front profile, the new Mahindra Thar now gets a newly designed six-slat grille, LED DRLās, a redesigned front bumper and raised fenders. On the side, it continues to be offered with the two-door cabin setup but it now gets the option for factory fitted removable hardtop and fixed or manually convertible soft-top option to choose from. Moving to the rear end, Mahindra offers a newly designed tail lamp unit with LED treatment, split tailgate setup and it continues to offer the spare wheel that is mounted on the tailgate.
At the 2020 Auto Expo, Force Motors revealed the upcoming Gurkha and the profile remains very much similar to the outgoing model. It does come with design updates such as an all-new grille, a bi-LED headlight setup with new cube-like LED DRLās surrounding it, a redesigned front bumper that makes the front end looks muscular and it will continue to get the snorkel. Moving to the sides, it will get a big single glass-pane for the rear window as compared to the dual-pane window and quarter glass setup seen on the earlier model. At the rear, it will get a redesigned windshield, a tow hook, a tail-mounted spare wheel that will be placed at the centre and tail lamps that will now be placed on the body shell instead on the bumpers.

The cabin of the new-gen Thar has undergone many changes and upgrades in such a way that it caters the need for daily commutes and some fun off-roading. Unlike the previous model, the new Thar now offers better ride quality and comfort. It now gets power windows, the dashboard is revamped and it offers a faux carbon fibre around the air-con vents, toggle switches, a grab rail, a classy plaque that denotes the chassis number and it now holds a touchscreen infotainment unit. On the top of the line LX trim, Mahindra is equipping it with front-facing seats at the rear which provides adequate knee room and legroom which is comfortable to accommodate two passengers.
Coming to the inside of the upcoming Gurkha, the cabin has finally been revamped and also offers new creature comfort features. Just like the New Thar, even the 2020 Gurkha gets power windows and a touchscreen infotainment unit. To complement the overalls ambience, the cabin will get a dual-tone scheme but it will continue to be offered with hard plastics. It offers an additional grab rail mounted on the A-pillar for the front passenger, redesigned circular air-con vents, 12 V charging socket and some basic buttons to operate the hazard lights and defogger. At the rear, it will be offered with front-facing captain seats which are positioned a bit higher than the front seats and foldable jump seats at the boot.

Both the new generation Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha are being updated with new modern features and technology in an attempt to attract conventional SUV buyers. Mahindra offers a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and it also doubles up as an Adventure Statistics Display (first in class feature). In addition to this, it also comes equipped with roof-mounted speakers, steering mounted controls, a semi-digital instrument cluster and a TFT MID unit Display. In terms of creature comfort features the Thar now gets include cruise control, key-less entry, power windows and a manual HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) system.
On the other hand, the upcoming Gurkha will get power windows and a touchscreen infotainment unit but it does miss out on steering mounted controls. In addition to this, the instrument cluster is revamped, it now gets an analogue cluster along with a MID unit at the centre and it gets a manual HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) system.
New Thar Vs Force Gurkha PowerTrain
For the first time, Mahindra is offering the New Thar with a petrol and diesel engine option and it also introduces a 6 speed automatic transmission along with the 6-speed manual transmission. The petrol model is being powered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that churns out 150 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. Whereas, the diesel model is being offered with a 2.2-litre unit that generates 130 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque.
Coming to the mechanicals of the upcoming Gurkha, Force Motors will be powering it with a BS6 compliant 2.6-litre diesel engine. This oil burner will be coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox and it will be able to put out 90 bhp of power and 230 Nm of torque. Both the vehicles will be offered with a 4WD system along with lockable differential systems.
In comparison, the new Thar has an upper hand as it offers a petrol engine and an automatic transmission for both the petrol and diesel engines. On the other hand, it is being rumoured that Force Motors is planning to get a 2WD variant along with multiple body configurations and wheelbase options.
New Thar Vs Force Gurkha Safety Features
Keeping safety in mind both the New Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha will be equipped with standard safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminder system for the driver and front passenger, speed alert system and rear parking sensors. In addition to this, Mahindra is offering the 2020 Thar with hill hold control, hill descent control, ESP with rollover mitigation and a roll cage.
New Thar Vs Force Gurkha Off-Road Capabilities
Mahindra now offers the new-gen Thar with ESP for the mechanical locking differential and an electro-mechanical driveline disconnect for the front axle. In addition to this, the new Thar now gets a ground clearance of 226mm, improved approach angle of 42 degrees, departure angle of 37 degree and ramp-over angle of 27 degrees. As in the previous model, it continues to get the four-wheel low, four-wheel high and two-wheel drive modes.
Force Motors, on the other hand, had recently update the Gurkha with a solid axle at the front. However, at the 2020 Auto Expo, the upcoming Gurkha was showcased with IFS. It will continue to be offered with a low range gearbox, four-wheel low, four-wheel high and two-wheel drive modes and manual locking differential to tackle tough terrains.
