2021 Electric Car Range Comparison Test - How Far Will They Go On a Single Charge?
Electric cars are slowly increasing in popularity in India and the Indians are slowly warming up to the thought of electric mobility. Once we had only a handful of electric cars but not it is increasing. While currently electric cars are not on a mass scale, the increased acceptance will drive in more models plus give extended choice. Like a petrol or diesel car, the range of an electric car is even more important. Unlike a standard petrol or diesel car, en EV has to rely on its range more due to lack of charging stations. Hence a longer range affords more distance to be travelled on a single charge. So with range being the most important consideration before buying an EV, we have shortlisted all the top 6 electric cars sold in India and compared their claimed range and real world expected range on a single charge.
1. Tata Tigor EV Range
The Tigor EV is currently the most affordable EV in India with a price tag of Rs 12.5 lakh starting. The car has been updated with more range now and a battery. The range claimed is 213km and that is an ARAI claimed range. That is more than its previous range of 142km. However at best expect a real world range of 100-120km. It has got both AC and DC fast charging.
2. Tata Nexon EV Range
With a starting price of Rs 14 lakh and reaching Rs 16 lakh, the Nexon EV is the most affordable EV SUV in India. This aggressive pricing has helped it become the best selling EV in India with over 3000 sales. It is the most popular EV since it has a nice balance between price and range plus features. The Nexon EV has a range of 312km as per ARAI while the real world range would be 200-220km.
3. MG ZS EV Range
The ZS EV is the first electric car from MG in India and recently the car was updated also. It has a new 44.5Wh battery pack and that has increased the range of the car. Hence the claimed range has gone up from 340km to 419km while the real world range is around 300km. That is a big change while the power remains the same. The ZS is a premium luxury SUV that packs in many features plus has good space too.
4. Hyundai Kona Range
The Kona from Hyundai was and it still is, the only EV sold by them in India. At the time the Kona was also the first electric SUV to be launched in India. The Kona in India is sold only as an EV stand alone model like the MG. The Kona is a crossover while the design is one of its strong points. The claimed range though is 452km via a 39.2kWh battery but real world range is about 300 km. By range terms it is one of the cars with the highest range in India. It is however expensive with a price-tag of Rs 25.3 lakh.
5. Mercedes EQC Range
The very first electric luxury EV launched in India has been by Mercedes. The EQC is part of the EQ brand name which is all about EVs and is a dedicated model based on EVs. The EQC is a big EV SUV that is powered by two electric motors on each axle. That enables it to have over 400 bhp while the range is also at 400km with the real world figure being 300-350km. This is a 5-seater luxury car and is priced at Rs 1 cr.
6. Jaguar I-Pace Range
This is currently India's most expensive EV with a price tag of Rs 1.06 cr starting. This is an import and is a luxury crossover EV SUV. The I-Pace also gets dual electric motors while the combined power output reads 400hp. The range is also high with a claimed number of 470km. Do note unlike the EQC, the I-Pace has a WLTP claimed range and not ARAI while expect a real world range of between 300-350km.
Electric Car in India Range Comparison - Verdict
Barring the Tigor EV, all EVs claim above 300km on a single charge and like fuel efficiency numbers, the actual range might be less depending on the way you drive to even the road surface. EVs are dependent on many factors like number of passengers, city or highway driving conditions along with the weather conditions, driving behavior and usage of Air conditioning, Lights and other power consuming features. Hence the actual range that you might get would be different.
That said the Kona has the highest range amongst the EVs priced below the 30 lakh mark while the Jaguar I-Pace has highest range among the super luxury electric cars in India priced at Rs 1 cr.
The best value for money electric car in India is the Nexon EV since it is much more affordable than other EV’s and also manages to have a decent range of 200+ km in real world condition which is sufficient for over 75% of consumers. Hence it is also best selling electric car in India right now.
We can expect a lot more electric cars to be launched in India in 2021-2022 like the Mahindra eXUV300, Tata Altroz Electric, Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R EV, Renault K-ZE, 2022 New Hyundai Kona, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y
