Kia Seltos vs Tata Nexon vs Mahindra XUV300 GNCAP Safety

Top Selling SUV Safety Rating Comparison to Find Safest SUV in India - 2020
Recently Global NCAP had crash tested the Kia Seltos and the results are in. The Seltos got three stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. Since the base variant was used, the Seltos has a double frontal airbag and pretensioners as standard. However its structure was rated as a borderline case unstable by GNCAP. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head protection is given as adequate for both front passengers as both airbags bottomed out during the crash test. Neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection was good for passengers and marginal for driver.
The car offers SBR for the front seating positions. GNCAP says that the car showed limited protection for the 3 year old head and neck while the 18 month old received acceptable protection. The car does not offer standard 3 point belts in all seating positions and has no ISOFIX anchorages standard.
So how does the Seltos compare with other SUVs tested by GNCAP?
Well the compact SUV, XUV300 from Mahindra scored five stars for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupant protection. With the XUV300, Mahindra achieved the highest combined result in Global NCAP’s cars of India crash tests. The XUV300 showed the least level of intrusion and by far the best side-impact crashworthiness performance amongst cars tested from India so far.
The XUV300 gets 2 airbags as standard plus ESC and side airbags are optional. Its structure and its footwell area was rated as stable by GNCAP. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was also rated well. Chest protection for passengers was good and driver chest protection was adequate. Under the latest standards, the XUV300 has passed through the requirements when tested on the passenger or driver side. It also scored well on child protection.
The other 5-star car is the Tata Nexon in the SUV range. They tested the pre-facelift Nexon and it was Global NCAP’s First Five Star Car in India. Done at the end of 2018, the Nexon got five stars for Adult Occupant Protection and three stars for Child Occupant Protection. Before that, on an earlier test, the Nexon got four stars. However, then Tata added more safety features including a Seat Belt Reminder for driver plus passenger as standard for all variants.
Kia Seltos Safety Rating - Verdict
3 stars safety rating for the Seltos has been bit surprising and while it is a decent score, we expected nothing less than 5 stars from Kia. It remains to be seen whether Kia will offer more safety features and re-send for another test to offer safer cars for India
