Expert Review Report on KIA Sonet VS New Hyundai i20 Comparison - Looks, Specs, Features, Price
2020 has seen many big new car launches but it is not over yet as the last big launch of the year is the new i20 from Hyundai. However KIA has just launched its Sonet and that was also a much awaited new launch. So while the new i20 is due soon, how does the Sonet compare to this premium hatchback since both would be expected to be in the same price bracket? We tell you that exactly below. Read on.
LOOKS AND DIMENSIONS
Both cars would be roughly the same in length since both would have to duck the under 4m rule. Internationally the new i20 is longer than 4m but in India it would be below 4m of course. The Sonet also just ducks below the 4m so roughly both have the same length.
In terms of width and height the Sonet is slightly wider and also taller of course being an SUV but the i20 is not far behind. Both are different body styles though with one being a hatchback and the other being an SUV. That said, both look aggressive and stylish. The new i20 would be much more premium and aggressive with the new grille and a large set of tail-lamps with a unique twist in them. The Sonet also grabs your attention with the two joined tail-lamps and the front with the big grille. Ultimately depends on which one you like more yourself!
INTERIORS AND FEATURES
In today's age the car buyer demands both quality and features. Both Hyundai and KIA do that better than anyone else and their latest cars show that. Both share massive touch-screens, digital instruments and a huge features list. The new i20's India spec feature list is not out but we expect Hyundai to give it more features than even a Venue. So expect the 10.25 inch touch-screen from the Creta, wireless charging, air purifier, digital instruments, Bluelink with more features, sunroof, rear ac vents etc. That would make the i20 the best equipped hatchback and Hyundai might go one step ahead and give it paddle-shifters too.
The Sonet misses out on paddle-shifters but gets a 10.25 inch touch-screen, virus protection with air purifier, digital instruments, sunroof, rear ac vents, multiple Bluetooth pairing at same time, front and rear parking sensors, UVO connect with enhanced voice commands and more. So it will be an interesting battle as to how or whether the Sonet will win the features battle here.
In terms of space we do expect the i20 to have an advantage as the Sonet just like the Venue has a small rear seat that is best for two. While the i20 would be expected to have a roomier rear seat instead with added comfort and seating for three.
A lot in this department is expected to be shared by these two but the new i20 would get more engine options than the Venue plus it will take the fight to the Sonet. The Sonet gives you a 1.2l petrol and then a 1.0 turbo petrol. Then it has a 1.5l diesel. The real USP is the gearbox options as you get an iMT in the Sonet with the turbo petrol but also a DCT automatic while even the diesel has an automatic. The new i20 will not offer you a diesel automatic because of the price but it will have both an iMT and a DCT automatic with the 1.0 turbo but even the 1.2l might offer you a CVT automatic.
The Sonet occupies the Rs 7-13 lakh price bracket and that ranges from the base 1.2l petrol to the diesel auto. The new i20 might start cheaper at Rs 6.6 lakh and also top out at a lesser price. So it is clear that the i20 would be the practical option for those who want space and hatchback design inspired looks. The Sonet is for those who want an SUV along with the higher ground clearance. That said both are a lot closer in terms of competition than you might think.
