New Mahindra Thar Looks
New Mahindra Thar is completely new and is based on an all new chassis which is the latest one from Mahindra based on the new Scorpio. It is still ladder frame but strengthened and has better road driving also factored in along with off-roading. In terms of looks the new Thar still has the basic shape like the old Thar which also has the same style as the old Jeep with which Mahindra has its history linked too. You will find however some big changes within that. The new headlamps are bigger LEDs plus there are DRLs along with the grille also re-worked and the bumper being divided into two parts. The grille is having a new look while the bumpers are more rounded and the car is much bigger. There are new bigger 18 inch alloys for the LX version as seen here. The side view is still like the old Thar but again has bigger and rounder edges. The new Thar is still a 3-door and you will also see Thar badges everywhere too. Move to the rear and you have new tail-lamps and still having the spare tyre at the rear. The build quality is much better and so is the paint finish.
New Mahindra Thar Interior
Inside compared to the exterior the interior is a sea change. The new Thar is based on the bigger platform and is also having its wheelbase being extended to have some space inside. The design is a lot more luxurious and everything is changed including the steering wheel inside. You have the new looks steering wheel and a centre console which now has a 7inch touchscreen along with round vents and switches below it. The quality is superb and much better than the earlier Thar or even other other Mahindra cars like the XUV or the Scorpio.
The instrument cluster also looks modern while the door pockets have good space along with other practical spaces. The LX spec is the most luxurious Thar with features like steering controls with voice commands, 7inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors, climate control, navigation, dual USB ports, an audio system with speakers on the roof, driver seat height adjust and more. The new Thar is also a hardtop and a convertible while you can even remove the doors. The new Thar while being a 3-door has a lot more space and even the rear seats on the LX are now forward facing. Getting inside here via the front seats is an issue but then space is good once there. The boot space is less however.
New Thar Driving Review
We drove the diesel Thar and it gets a gets a 2.0 diesel which makes 130 bhp and 300Nm. With the new Thar the driving experience is a lot changed from the earlier one. The refinement from the diesel is impressive while the 6-speed automatic is smooth and perfect for city use. On the run the new Thar feels slighter and easier but the turning circle is still big. However the engine has good performance with a nice torque spread giving it a punchy performance. Overtaking or driving in the highway is also not an issue anymore. It is quick and is much more stable now with the steering much better at high speeds. But the new Thar is still an old school SUV and you do not expect the same agility like the road biased SUVs like the Kia Seltos. That said it is a massive improvement over the earlier and feels even quicker than the Scorpio now!
New Mahindra Thar Diesel Automatic Mileage
A lot of owners will go for the diesel Thar of course since the torque of the diesel plus the longer range will help in going for off-roading and of course less fuel stops. The diesel Thar no doubt has the bigger range but we drove the diesel automatic and we got 8.5/9 kmpl in the city with aggressive driving plus acceleration runs. We also drove the new petrol Thar in the city where the mileage was in single digits though slightly lower than the diesel of course.
New Thar 4x4 Off-Road Review
Despite the new Thar getting more luxurious and having more features along with being much easier on the road to drive, the new Thar is still capable off-road. It has all the proper 4x4 system and still a proper lever to use it. The ground clearance and abilities are in-fact better than the old Thar. You have a proper low-range and as said earlier the 226mm ground clearance helps clearing obstacles with ease. The diesel Thar has enough power to also take you through slush or rocks or anything. The new Thar is very capable indeed while the approach and departure angle is more or less same as the hardcore earlier Thar. It also wades through deep water with a capability of going upto 650mm deep water.
Overall the new Thar is a huge change and will appeal to a lot more people this time. The new platform means the new Thar is much more spacious and also gets a lot of comfort and technology features which would help owners drive it everyday with ease. You can now take it on long journeys with ease and on the road the new Thar will not make you tired. The automatic is the one we would get as it adds to the convenience factor very much. Yet still the new Thar remains an off-roader first and that has not changed and it is still the best on that aspect. Mahindra has done a great job.
