Most Popular SUVs in India - Apr 2020

While car sales have reduced considerably over the past few days due to various factors, one trend is clear that only the SUVs and the hatchback space is surviving so as to speak. Sedan sales have collapsed and even hatchback sales to some extent have gone down. But a few SUVs are currently selling like hot cakes. What is emerging is that Hyundai India is the current leader in the SUV space with the sales of the Venue plus Creta. Hyundai with its Venue and Creta has become the biggest SUV seller in India.
Compact SUVs
The leader here has been the Hyundai Venue from the start and nearly has been holding its own in this segment. It sold 6127 units last month and continues to be the most popular option. Second in line is the Maruti Vitara Brezza which sold 5513 units. It will be interesting to see Vitara Brezza sales now that it is petrol only as recently Maruti re-introduced the Brezza with a 1.5l petrol engine while the 1.3l diesel has been axed. Do note that the Venue has both BS6 petrol and diesel engines. The new Tata Nexon which has been given a thorough update recently with new styling plus BS6 engines sold 2646 units. The Ford EcoSport sold 2197 units respectively.
Midsize SUVs
This is turning into a battle between the new Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. For now the Seltos has the lead with 7466 units while the Creta did 6706 units. However keep in mind the fact that the Creta was launched on the 16th of last month and because of lockdown the effect was seen also. Also the new Creta currently sits on a 6 week plus waiting period. The real picture will emerge in May or June when full production is resumed. The Hectror has managed a steady 1500 plus sales month on month while the latest sales are at just below that number with 1402 units. Tata did 632 units of the Harrier and it also recieved a BS6 diesel engine with more power along with an automatic recently. Other SUVs like the Jeep Compass sold even less and due to new competition things are getting difficult for it.
Full Size SUVs
Here the situation was more grim excepting the Toyota Fortuner which sold in four digits while rest of the competition sold in meagre numbers. The Fortuner sold over 1000 units at 1100 units which is more than three times its competition. The fact that it has its own strong brand and loyal fan following is the reason. Also the move to BS6 has not made the Fortuner have a smaller engine. The Fortuner has the same sized diesel BS6 engine while the new Ford Endeavour goes in for a downsized 2.0 diesel and it sold 381 units. Other SUVs like the Mahindra Altruras etc sold even less indicating the lack of demand in the 30 lakh plus SUV space.
