New Hyundai Creta Diesel Review

How Good is Hyundai Creta Diesel?
Diesel is not dead and while Maruti has stopped making them, they are still very much in demand. Ask Hyundai India. More than 50 percent sales for the Creta has been diesel and that is for a reason. Diesel is something buyers want when looking for a large SUV to carry family. Plus with fuel prices being high, diesel is also much more efficient than petrol while saving you money. So if your commute is longer or you travel a lot on weekends or go for long trips then a diesel makes sense. So how good is the new Creta diesel? We find out.
Creta Diesel Mileage Review

The Creta diesel is available with a 1.5l engine which makes 115 bhp and 250Nm. This is a new BS6 diesel engine and has replaced the earlier 1.6 diesel which was in the previous Creta. This new diesel comes with a 6-speed manual as driven here or a torque converter automatic. We will do a Creta diesel automatic review soon.
Back to the diesel manual and the official figure from ARAI is 21.4 kmpl but we got a lot more when driven in the highway. During maintaining a 70-80 kmph speed we got upto 26 kmpl plus and easily 20-22 kmpl. Thus when driven at highway speeds cruising around you can easily match the official mileage figure. In the city the way you drive is important to get the desired mileage. While driving hard the Creta diesel efficiency will fall to 14-16 kmpl but careful city driving would result in 17-18 kmpl. If you want to know the mileage figure of the Creta diesel AT- it is indeed less than the manual at 18.3 kmpl while the city use will lower it further. That said for diesel automatics the Creta diesel is quite efficient.
Creta Diesel Driving Experience
Turn the engine on and you hardly hear it as the new diesel engine is much quieter now. It is in-fact the most silent engine in the diesel SUV midsize space now. In the city and at low speeds you will not hear it plus the gearbox along with the clutch is easy to use. Also it is the same for the steering. You do not need much effort in using the Creta’s steering and that is a USP when using it in city as quick direction changes are indeed possible with the Creta feeling like a much smaller car to drive behind the wheel. In terms of refinement it is only when pushed hard that the diesel makes some noise and that too not being too intrusive. The engine is also much easier to use now as the engine has enough low-end torque to make less gear changes. You can make u-turns and drive nearly all the time with 3rd gear which is very useful.
The Creta has a 6th gear and in the highway you have to use that. It is powerful at the top-end and is best at maintaining good speeds with a linear power delivery. The diesel does not feel heavy at corners nor is the ride affected- it is a bit firm at low speeds though. Yes compared to the petrol, the diesel rides a touch firmer but it is reasonably smooth and better than the earlier Creta.
Which one to Buy - Hyundai Creta Petrol or Diesel?
The Creta in diesel manual form that you see on this page is priced at Rs 15.8 lakh. It is one of the best diesel SUVs right now and a big improvement over the earlier Creta diesel. Buy this over the petrol if you want efficiency and do a lot of driving plus also do a lot of road trips. It is refined and easy to drive plus being a lot more efficient. Thus it is no surprise that over 50 percent customers chose the diesel Creta over petrol! In terms of whether you would want to buy the diesel automatic and manual, that’s another argument altogether. The diesel automatic Creta is around Rs 1.4 lakh more expensive than the manual which brings to the question if you want to spend that much since the diesel automatic Creta is the most expensive Creta that you can buy. Our choice is the manual as unless you do a lot of in-city traffic which requires a lot of gear changes, the light gearbox and clutch makes the money saved over the automatic worth it. Thus we think go for the diesel manual. Overall this is right now the best diesel SUV for features or refinement or even efficiency in its class.
