New Hyundai i20 Diesel vs Petrol - COMPARISON

Detailed Comparison - New Hyundai i20 Diesel vs Petrol
Hyundai has launched the new i20 and we have also driven so while you can read our first drive review here, in this article we will talk about the difference and whether you should buy a diesel i20 or petrol. The price difference is not so high when comparing certain variants but look closer and you can see some differences in trims and features what each engine offers. Here we do a comparison for you.
Diesel and Petrol i20 Specifications
We are comparing the turbo petrol i20 and the diesel since both are similar in power and price. The turbo petrol i20 gets a 1.0 three cylinder turbo unit with 120 bhp and 172Nm. The diesel is a 1.5l unit which makes 100 bhp and 240Nm. The big difference is the fact that the i20 diesel only gets a 6-speed manual while the turbo petrol i20 gets an iMT gearbox and a 7-speed DCT automatic.
Diesel vs Petrol Performance
Both i20 versions are fast but the turbo petrol is more enjoyable to drive. The diesel is better for cruising with its higher torque and smoother power output thanks. The turbo petrol is more fun and is built for enthusiastic driving but in the city you will the fact that unlike the diesel, the turbo iMT does not have a clutch and hence could be more relaxing but if you do a lot of highway journey then the diesel is better. The dual clutch automatic is of course smooth and gives the turbo petrol an edge in terms of use-ability plus comfort while the gearbox is also more responsive when going fast.
Diesel vs Petrol Fuel Economy
Expect the petrol iMT to give 20 kmpl while the DCT auto will give 20.25 kmpl. The diesel is reported to have an official mileage of 25.2 kmpl. In the actual usage pattern expect the turbo petrol to give 10-12 kmpl in city while highway will slightly increase that. The diesel one will give minimum 13-16 kmpl in city while highway would be 18/20 kmpl.
Diesel vs Petrol Cost
You can get both the turbo petrol and diesel in the top-end Asta (O) trim. The iMT Sportz starts at Rs 88 lakh while the Sportz diesel is Rs 9 lakh. The Asta iMT is Rs 9.9 lakh while the DCT Asta turbo petrol is Rs 10.6 lakh. The diesel is not available in Asta at all as you have to pay extra for the Asta (O) at Rs 10.6 lakh. The Asta (O) DCT petrol is Rs 11.18 lakh.
Hence the diesel manual seems more value if you drive a lot and need the mileage plus range of a diesel. However the petrol will appeal more for the traditional city based buyer with occasional highway use plus the turbo petrol gives you an automatic choice which is missing on the diesel.
