New Hyundai Verna CVT vs DCT Comparison

New Hyundai Verna CVT vs DCT. Which Automatic to Buy?
When the new Hyundai Verna was launched, Hyundai not only added a new turbo petrol engine to the Verna range but along with that a new gearbox option also. So now if you are thinking of buying a petrol Verna then you have two gearbox options to choose from in the Hyundai Verna range with the CVT and DCT. We help you decide which is better and more practical.
CVT or DCT - Engine and Performance
More than the gearbox, the other big difference lies with the engines paired with them. The Verna CVT comes with the 1.5l petrol engine which makes 115 bhp and 144Nm. The DCT dual clutch automatic comes with the 1.0 turbo engine which makes 120 bhp and 172Nm of torque. In terms of performance, the better engine is no doubt the turbo petrol. The turbo petrol has more torque which means the performance is more accessible and enjoyable. The 1.5l petrol takes more time to be as quick and lacks the immediate punch. Both petrol engines are refined and smooth though.
CVT or DCT - Gearbox
The CVT automatic gearbox has infinite gear ratios and no clutch to change gears. The result is that CVT is best for low speed smoothness and for fuel economy. We also felt the CVT Verna was a bit smoother in the slow traffic over the DCT Verna and also a lot more efficient. Thus if mileage is important then take the CVT no doubt.
However if you like driving and performance then no doubt the DCT Verna is a lot better over the CVT. DCT automatic gearboxes have two clutches and one each for add and even gears. Thus you get a more responsive downshift and upshift so performance is felt being much better with quicker response times. On the other hand you will get 8-10 kmpl in terms of mileage whereas you will get near 12kmpl for the CVT.
Verna CVT or DCT - Maintenance
The CVT gearbox in the Verna is not only more efficient but it is also cheaper to maintain. A DCT automatic is more expensive and complex to make thus maintenance might be an issue though that is only long term and Hyundai does assure its reliability but constant runs in traffic might heat up the DCT gearbox.
Verna CVT or DCT - Variants and Price
You get the Verna 1.5l CVT in SX and SX(O) trim whereas the Verna Turbo DCT is available in only the SX(O) trim. The Verna CVT is also slightly cheaper being priced at Rs 11.9 lakh and Rs 13.8 lakh whereas the turbo 1.0 Verna is Rs 14 lakh.
CVT or DCT - Styling and Features
The Verna Turbo and CVT are different to look at- both inside and outside. The Verna Turbo has the black theme with the different rear bumper and a blackened grille plus more black elements which looks sporty. The Verna turbo also gets a black interior with red accents.
The CVT Verna gets a two tone beige and black interior which actually makes the cabin more spacious and airy. It may not get some of the black elements but nearly all of the aggressive looks are there. The other big change is that the Turbo Verna gets paddle-shifters with its DCT and the 1.5L CVT does not.
CVT or DCT - Which one to Buy?
It is clear that the Verna CVT is the one to buy if you want fuel economy and a smooth/convenience free drive for the city. The dual-tone cabin is better for space and the CVT is also more efficient along with being cheaper. Thus, if you are looking for value for money then go for this.
The Verna Turbo is for those who want performance and for those who love driving. It is quicker and more enjoyable to drive plus looks more aggressive too. It is not that much more expensive over the top-end 1.5l CVT and that means if you love driving above all then get the turbo DCT.
