Micro SUVs are the smallest type of SUVs and are basically hatchbacks with more ground clearance and are well under 4m in length. They are also the most affordable kind of SUVs and are mostly available with a 1 litre or a 1.2 litre petrol engine only. The micro SUV are suited for millennials and small family buying a car for city driving with occasional long drives. The perfect example of a Micro SUV is the KUV100 from Mahindra. The micro SUV segment is all set to get a new entrant in form of the Tata HBX Hornbill. While the production version will carry a different name, we have already seen the pre-production car with some concept-like details at the last Auto Expo. Tata is expected to launch the 2021 Tata HBX Hornbill by August in India. Based on the latest information, the launch date of HBX Hornbill may in September,2021. While the HBX would be one of the smallest SUVs out there, its main rivals would still be other hatchbacks in the price range. By that we mean the Hyundai i10 Nios and the Maruti Swift of course. The HBX is small and would be just matching the Swift while being bigger than the Nios. In terms of length the HBX will be at 3840mm while the Swift is at 3845mm along with Nios at 3805mm. The HBX has the wide SUV stance with a width of 1822mm while the Swift comes in at 1735mm along with the Nios at 1680mm. Where the HBX will score is in terms of the SUV design which gets the Harrier like two part DRL and headlamp treatment. It is also taller while having 16inch alloys for the top-end variant. The Tata HBX Hornbill micro-SUV should offer a higher ground clearance of around 180 mm as compared to 170 mm in Maruti Swift and 165 mm in Hyundai i10 Nios Hatchback

The HBX will have a wheelbase of 2450mm and that is similar to the other two hatchbacks. But the raised roofline along with the SUV stance make it have more space here with the rear seat wider than the hatchbacks. The design of the HBX would also be rugged and different from the Tiago while it will have a 7-inch screen along with a part-digital cluster. The Nios and Swift also get all the features you expect with the Nios giving tough competition to the HBX with wireless charging and rear AC vents amongst others.

The HBX would be limited to petrol engines only with a 1.2l petrol engine producing 86 PS of power at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 3,300 rpm. The transmission options would include 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). The other engine could be the 1.2l turbo petrol with both the manual and the AMT. The Nios comes with a 1.0 turbo petrol along with a natural aspirated 1.2l petrol engine producing 83 PS of power at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. That said it also gets a 1.2l diesel being the only one here to get one. The gearbox options include an AMT and a manual gearbox. The Swift gets only one petrol engine option with the 1.2l dualjet motor producing 88 PS of power at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm with both AMT and the manual gearbox on offer. The new Maruti Swift gives an ARAI rated fuel economy of 23.2 Kmpl (Manual) and 23.7 Kmpl for AMT. On the other hand, the 1.2 litre Hyundai i10 Nios Petrol has an ARAI rated fuel economy of 20.7 Kmpl (Manual) and 20.5 Kmpl for AMT. The Tata HBX Hornbill is expected to have an ARAI rated fuel economy of 19 - 20 Kmpl.

The Swift is priced from Rs 5.8 lakh to Rs 8.4 lakh while the Nios is priced between Rs 5.2 lakh to Rs 8.4 lakh. The HBX would be expected to be priced along these lines but we might expect the HBX to be even cheaper with a starting price tag of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh for the top-end variant. That would mean buyers would get a small SUV for the price of a hatchback and that is really good value for sure!
