Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel 2.4 AT - Exclusive Review
Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel Automatic - Exclusive Review
Does this car need an introduction? The Toyota Innova has been one of the most reliable cars and also one of the most popular. However it is the current Innova Crysta that has been one of the most successful cars in its class and in India. It is Toyota's most famous car and many believe it is the best car that they make. Month on month the Innova Crysta sells in big numbers with no competition.
However recently with the MG Hector Plus or even the KIA Carnival, the Innova has faced some competition but still has its own large audience which just does not shift to another car. With BS6 norms coming in, Toyota discontinued the 2.8l diesel and has only continued with the 2.4l. While prices have increased the new 2.4l diesel automatic is now the most luxurious Innova Crysta but how good is this diesel engine in BS6 form? We drive it.
Engine and Performance
The 2.8l diesel was available with an automatic earlier but now with that engine being discontinued, the 2.4l diesel gets the 6-speed automatic. A 5-speed manual is however standard like earlier. The 2.4l diesel has had various updates done to meet the BS6 norms including a diesel particulate filter system. It is also slightly tweaked in terms of the power and torque with the 150 bhp and 360Nm of torque in case of the automatic. The manual 2.4l gets 343Nm.
We had the 2.4l AT diesel and starting it shows the change to BS6 has made it more refined. There is less noise now and once driving the diesel is reduced a lot. The updated refinement makes the driving experience better and more premium. The 2.4l diesel lacks the outright punch of the 2.8l but you hardly notice as the performance is smooth and build of power is linear.
The automatic gearbox is combined well with the engine and in regular D mode, it’s easy to drive and gives power instantly for city progress. It is smoother plus on the highway or at high speeds, the gearbox responds especially with the power mode uses. The Innova Crysta steering too gets direct and feels brilliant in its stability. It is also the most rugged MPV with near SUV with off-road ability plus good wading depth. It is a rugged and go-anywhere MPV which is its USP. You will get 12 kmpl in city driving.
The looks of the Innova Crysta remain the same and it looks big yet also quite elegant in this colour especially. The interior feels luxurious in this top-spec variant with wood finish and leather used. It is also comfortable with the second row getting captain seats and you can also easily push the front passenger seat via a slide function. It also gets tables and a rear ac with digital display. It is comfortable and luxurious. However the touch-screen lacks features which are available in cheaper cars like Android Auto or Apple CarPlay plus it also does not have a sunroof.
The base Innova starts at Rs 15.3 lakh while the top-spec Innova Crysta diesel automatic is Rs 24 lakh. The price has increased but there is still nothing to rival the Innova Crysta at this price. The BS6 diesel is smooth and works very well while the USPs of the Innova remain the same as before. A solid buy and a car we recommend.
