Toyota Urban Cruiser vs KIA Sonet - Car Comparison
Upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser vs KIA Sonet - Which is better Buy?
The compact SUV segment already witnessed some stiff competition with the likes of the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 coming in but earlier this year the new Nexon from Tata and Brezza from Maruti further added some new choices for the compact SUV buyer. Now there are two more added to the list in the form of the KIA Sonet and the Toyota Urban Cruiser. Both of these compact SUVs would be launched around the end of this month but the question is which one should you be waiting for? We answer that question below!
LOOKS AND DIMENSIONS
The KIA Sonet and Toyota Urban Cruiser are both linked to existing compact SUVs. The Urban Cruiser is rebadged Maruti Brezza but the Sonet and Venue do share the same platform but unlike the Urban Cruiser, they have a lot more differences between them. The Sonet looks completely different to the Venue plus it looks quite attractive- more so than the Urban Cruiser. The Sonet in GT Line looks fantastic and sporty with red detailing and the slim LED headlamps along with the well detailed grille. The Urban Cruiser has some changes from the Brezza but compared to the Sonet, looks more like a boxy SUV. However the Sonet is actually wider and taller over the Urban Cruiser plus has more ground clearance too. Both get 16inch wheels though.
INTERIORS AND FEATURES
The interiors of the Urban Cruiser are again similar to the Brezza but it does get new upholstery. The design though is boxy unlike the Sonet. The Sonet comes across as having the more premium looking interior. Depending on Tech line or GT line you can have dual tone or all black interior with red accents. The Sonet has the bigger boot but the Urban Cruiser has the roomier rear seat and it can seat three passengers better than the Sonet. The Sonet has the upper hand in the features department though with the biggest equipment list as it has the biggest touchscreen, ventilated and cooled seats, drive and traction modes, digital instruments, virus killer and air purifier, wireless charging, sunroof, rear ac vents, front and rear parking sensors and more. The Urban Cruiser cannot compete here and simply lacks the features of the Sonet but it does get the basics like smartphone connectivity, touchscreen, rear camera etc.
The Urban Cruiser is petrol only and will come with a 1.5l petrol with 105 bhp and 138Nm. There would be a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter. The Sonet will have both diesel and petrol with much more in terms of options. You have a 1.2l petrol and a 1.0 turbo petrol while there is a 1.5l diesel. The 1.2l petrol makes 83 bhp and 115Nm which is less than the 1.5l Urban Cruiser while the 1.0 turbo makes 120 bhp and 172Nm which is a lot more. You get either a 5-speed manual with the 1.2l Sonet, a 6-speed iMT with the 1.0 turbo or a 7-speed DCT with the turbo. The diesel has either a manual or a torque converter auto. The Urban Cruiser also gets a Smart hybrid system which is not there on the Sonet. In terms of mileage you have 17.03 kmpl for the Urban Cruiser, 18.7 for the automatic. The Sonet gives 18.4 kmpl for the 1.2, 18.2 kmpl for the iMT. The DCT gives 18.3 kmpl.
EXPECTED PRICE AND VERDICT
We expect the Sonet 1.2l to undercut the Urban Cruiser 1.5l with the Sonet starting below Rs 7 lakh. The Urban Cruiser would be more than 8 lakh starting. The top-end petrol Urban Cruiser would be near 12 lakh or below it while the Sonet would be also just below Rs 12 lakh for the DCT or around 11.5-11.7 lakh. Our verdict is that wait for the Urban Cruiser if you want space and efficiency but in everything else like looks, engines, options, features, the Sonet is the better choice.
