MG MOTOR UNVEILS ZS EV, LAUNCH IN JAN 2020

MG Motor India is all ready to bring its second product, after the Hector in the Indian car market. With the government promoting the transition from conventional cars to the electric and hybrid vehicles, we are slowly but gradually seeing more products from different carmakers. The Hyundai Kona EV was launched in July 2019 and recently Tata also launched the updated Tigor with better range. We also have the E2O hatchback and Verito sedan from Mahindra. Now, MG has unveiled its upcoming electric car, the ZS.
While the Hector, touted as India’s first internet car, received an overwhelming, MG would be willing to repeat the same with its first EV offering.
EXTERIOR
In terms of dimensions, the ZS EV is 4314 mm in length, 1620 mm tall, 1809 mm wide with a wheelbase of 2579 mm. Rather than a compact SUV, the ZS EV looks more of a crossover. It gets a wide grille at the front flanked by projector headlamps. It gets a sporty and bold look thanks to the muscular wheel arches and black cladding. The side profile is simple and the rear gets LED tail light.
INTERIOR
The dashboard is neatly laid out similar to the Hector. It gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Features include multi control steering wheel, 100+ voice commands, rear view camera, USB charging sockets at front and rear, panoramic sunroof, iSmart EV 2.0 connected car technology, PM 2.5 air filter.
POWERTRAIN
The India bound ZS EV will get the same powertrain as the one sold in UK. That includes a 44.5 KWh battery pack which gives a range of 340 km on a single charge. With a standard 7.4 KW charger and a charging cable that comes along with the car, the battery can be charged within 7 hours, which can be considerably reduced to 40-50 minutes using a 50 KW DC charger. The motor produces 141 BHP and 353 Nm of peak torque and can do 0-100 kmph in 8.5 seconds. The battery unit in the ZS EV is IP67 certified that means that it is water and dust proof. The battery has been sourced from CATL, a leading battery manufacturer and is a liquid cooled Nickel Manganese Cobalt type.
CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES
The ZS will be initially launched in only 5 cities, i.e., Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The company has partnered with Fortum and eChargeBays in these five cities to provide the charging facilities at selective public places and MG Motor showrooms.
RIVALS
The only rival for the ZS EV will be the Hyundai Kona. The widespread charging infrastructure of MG should give ZS the advantage, though Hyundai is also expanding its reach by setting up new charging units.
BOOKINGS AND PRICE
MG has announced that the pre-bookings of the ZS will commence from December 21 for Rs. 50,000. It will be assembled at the company’s Halol Plant in Gujarat. The expected prices for the MG ZS EV will start from Rs. 20 Lakh. Its likely to be launched in January 2020.
