As we enter the month of August, let's have a look at what the Indian automotive market was offered in the last month of July. Although the current automotive market in the nation is facing a lot of ups and downs, the car manufacturers are putting all their efforts to sail through the tough times.
Last month we saw some exciting launches in the electric segment and also many upgrades to the ongoing models. Below listed are some exciting cars that have been launched last month.
2019 Renault Duster
Renault has updated its iconic crossover and launched the new Duster in the Indian market. This crossover has been launched at a starting price of Rs 7.99 lakh (Ex-showroom, India).
The 2019 Renault Duster has been offered with two engine options and new features upgrades on the exterior as well as on the interior. Renault is retailing this crossover in a total of nine variants which includes three petrol model and six diesel models.
In terms of aesthetics and design, the 2019 DUster has been offered with a new front grille, chrome garnish around it, projector headlamp unit with LED DRL’s, redesigned front bumper, skid plates on the front and rear, muscular new bonnet, roof rails on top, plastic cladding on the tailgate and new alloy wheels.
Stepping inside the cabin, we see many changes done to the interior as well. It gets a new steering wheel, the infotainment unit is now upgraded and it is now compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The centre console now holds rectangular AC vents, chrome and gloss black finish and a dash insert that matches the exterior colour.
In terms of the safety kit, it gets standard features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder system for the front passengers and speed alert system. On the other hand, the automatic variants and AWD variants will get additional features such as ESC and hill start assist.
As we mentioned that the 2019 Renault Duster has been offered with mechanical updates, let's pop up the hood and have a look under it. Powering this crossover in the petrol model is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit that generates 106 bhp of power and 142Nm of twist. This petrol mill is matted with a five-speed manual gearbox and an optional six-step CVT automatic unit.
On the other hand, the diesel model is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit that is offered in two states of tune. One puts out 85 bhp of power and 200Nm of a twist whereas the other option generates 110 bhp of power and 245Nm of twist. The diesel unit is coupled with a six-speed manual or a six-speed AMT unit as optional.
Only the powerful diesel unit that churns out 110 bhp of power will be available in AWD (all-wheel drive) system option. But if we compare it to the previous model, now the mid-level RxS trim gets the AWD system instead of the top-level RxZ trim.
With the much-needed upgrade, the Duster now can compete more efficiently with its rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, Nissan Kicks and the Maruti Suzuki S-cross in the Indan market. In the coming months, the French carmaker is also launching the seven-seater MPV which is named as the Triber.
The All-New Hyundai Kona
In the Indian market as of now, there wasn't any product in the electric vehicle segment that wasn't much fun. But now this barrier has been broken with the launch of the Hyundai Kona. With this, it is the first electric vehicle from the Korean car manufacturer to the Indian market. Hyundai retails the Kona at an introductory price tag of Rs 25.30 lakh (Ex-Showroom, India) and this SUV is being brought on to the Indian soil via the CKD route.
Considering the design and aesthetics the Kona electric vehicle is very much similar to its conventionally powered model that is sold in the international market. But there are some differences indeed and that easily noticeable. These changes include the lack of grille at the front, a new design 17-inch alloy wheel, the badging and it also misses out on the exhaust system for obvious reasons.
In terms of features on the exterior, this electric gets all-LED headlight unit, LED tail light unit, roof rails and plastic body claddings all over. Hyundai is offering the Kona EV in 4 colour options namely- white, silver, blue and black and it is also available in dual-tone paint scheme which will cost Rs 20,000 more.
The cabin of this EV comes loaded with modern features and technology such as a 7.0-inch digital dashboard, a heads up display, automatic climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and wireless charging.
The display gives access to change the driving modes, manage the charge settings of the vehicle and also it displays information about the power consumption. In addition to this, for utmost comfort, the front passenger and driver seat has heating and ventilation features and the driver's seat is 10 way electrically adjustable. Other features include sunroof, electric parking brakes and heated wing mirrors.
The standard safety features in the safety kit include six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ESC, hill start assist, rear parking sensors and camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear defogger and ISOFIX child seat mounts. For the safety of other road users, Hyundai has equipped the Kona EV with a Virtual Engine Sound System that mimics the sound of the engine.
Hyundai powers the Kona EV with a permanent magnet synchronous motor which is capable of generating 136 bhp of power and 395Nm of twist. This motor is backed up with a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and according to the ARAI tests it gives out a range of 452km. In terms of performance, this electric SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph from 9.7 seconds.

In addition to this, Hyundai will also be providing a three-year warranty as standard and an 8 year or 1.6 lakh km warranty for the battery. As of now, this electric vehicle doesn't have any direct competition in the Indian market but soon in December 2019, we will see the launch of the MG EZS that will spice up the competition.
BMW X7
The German car manufacturer has launched its flagship SUV the all-new X7 in the Indian market. This luxury SUV comes with a price tag of Rs 98.90 lakh ( Ex-Showroom, India) and it sits above X5 and it also comes with two engine options for customers to choose from.
In terms of aesthetics and design, BMW has offered the X7 with an upright front end, slim LED headlight unit and BMW’s iconic large kidney grille. Moving towards the rear end it gets wide LED tail light units and that connected with a chrome strip. In all, BMW has offered the X7 with a muscular look that stands out of the crowd.
Moving inside the cabin, the interior quite similar to the X5. But there are a lot of differences as well, first being that the X7 comes with the third row in both six-seater and seven-seater seating configuration.
In terms of features and technology, BMW has offered this luxury SUV with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, gesture control, five-zone climate control. Digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and a three-piece glass sunroof.
Under the hood of the xDrive40i is a 3.0 litre Inline six, turbocharged petrol engine that generates 340 bhp of power and 450Nm of twist. On the other hand, the XDrive 30d models are powered with a 3.0-litre inline turbo diesel that churns out 265 bhp of power 620Nm torque. Both the engines come coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and it will also come loaded with BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system.
In the Indian market, the diesel model will be locally assembled while the petrol model will be brought onto the Indian soil via the CBU route. In the coming months, BMW will also launch the sporty X7 M50d model that will be top-end trim level. With this, the all-new BMW X7 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Range Rover in the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki CNG and Tour Ertiga
Maruti Suzuki has now launched a factory-fitted CNG variant for the New Ertiga. In addition to this, Maruti Suzuki has also launched a Tour model for the Ertiga for the taxi aggregators. The CNG variant is launched at Rs 8.88 lakh (Ex-Showroom, India) and the Tour M CNG model has been launched at Rs 8.83 lakh (Ex-Showroom, India)
If we compare the New Ertiga VXI model with the CNG variant it costs Rs 71000 more and the Tour M CNG is about Rs 66,000. Both models are available in the seven-seater configuration, the CNG tank holds a capacity of 10.86kg which is equivalent to 60 litres. According to Maruti Suzuki, the fuel efficiency from the CNG variant is about 26.2 km per kg.
Maruti has launched the CNG variant based on the mid-spec VXI trim level. On the other hand, the Tour M model is based on the standard VXI trim. In terms of features, both models come loaded with power steering, power windows at the front and rear, remote central locking, coloured MID, steering mounted audio and call controls, 12V power outlets at the second row. The safety kit consists of standard safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminder system, speed alert system and rear parking sensors.
Powering these models is a1.5 litre, K15B petrol engine that generates 105 bhp of power and 138Nm of twist. When the CNG mode is on, the power output is lowered, it puts out 92 bhp of power and 122Nm of twist. This engine is coupled with 5-speed manual gearbox.
In addition to this, Maruti Suzuki will soon launch the six-seater luxury model for the Ertiga. It may be sold with a different name and it will be retailed from their Nexa dealer chain.
