Renault HBC - Design, Competitors, Price, Launch Date
Renault is working on its most anticipated product, a compact SUV, codenamed as HBC. Renault already brought the Kwid facelift and the most affordable MPV, the Triber in the market last year. But now, Renault is all set to rival one of the best selling cars in India, viz the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Ford Ecosport and Tata Nexon.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
The HBC will be based on the Triber platform i.e., the CMF-A architecture that has been highly localised. CMF stands for Common Modular Family, as the platform is shared with Renault’s alliance partners, Nissan and Mitsubishi. The compact sedan is likely to be named as Kiger and will be powered by a 1.0 litre turbocharged HR10 3-cylinder petrol engine. The engine will be mated to a five-speed manual or a five speed AMT transmission. A diesel engine is likely to remain absent from all Renault cars post BS6. The HR10 3-cylinder petrol engine made its global debut in the Nissan Micra in 2018. The engine is derived from the HR13 1.3 litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine jointly developed by Renault and Daimler.
DESIGN & FEATURES
Coming to design, the SUV might have a boast split headlamp unit. The front will be characterised by a V-shaped upper grille. There will be enough design elements to differentiate from the Triber including a new bumper. The HBC compact SUV will carry similar design elements as in the facelifted Kwid and the Triber. On the interiors too, the HBC will borrow inspiration from the Triber. The compact SUV will give all other compact SUVs a run for their money especially when it comes to space. The HBC will also form the basis for the launch of Nissan’s new compact SUV for the Indian market.
The feature list will be long that includes cruise control, reverse camera, sunroof, steering mounted controls, ABS with EBD, airbags, climate control. Renault might introduce some connected car technologies in the HBC, apart from the technology such as Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay etc already available in the Triber.
The compact SUV is one of the most loved segments in India. Nearly every manufacturer is already present in this segment. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has been leading the sales, followed by Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford Ecosport, Mahindra XUV 300 and Honda WRV. We are looking forward to the USP that Renault will bring along with its compact SUV to beat the competition.
With a stiff competition already in this segment, we can expect Renault to price the Kiger aggressively, with starting prices from Rs. 6.5 Lakhs.
We can expect the launch at the end of this year. Interestingly, Renault has released a teaser just ahead of the Auto Expo 2020. The video shows C-shaped LED DRLs. What we can make out of the teaser is that it might be the concept of the much-awaited HBC or the Kiger compact SUV. Thus, Renault is expected to showcase the concept in the upcoming Auto Expo.
