After a long time of research and design innovations, in 2012, Maruti Suzuki launched the iconic MPV which further went to become the star of joint families of India, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, coined by the company as the Life Utility Vehicle (LUV). The car also starred in the 2013 hindi film "Mere Dad Ki Maruti". This is the first monocoque MPV in India. The facelift version, which we see in showrooms today was launched on 16th October, 2015. The diesel engine gets the SHVS Smart Hybrid technology making it the second car after Ciaz to receive this technology. Also,a few minor cosmetic changes is seen in the facelift. The Ertiga comes in L, L(O), V, Z and Z+ trims with the petrol and diesel options and also in 6 shades of Serene Blue, Radient Beige, Pearl Blue Blaze, Silky Silver, Granite Grey and Superior White. Being an MPV, having a long length is in its genes. The Ertiga has a length of 4296mm, width of 1695mm and height of 1685mm. The naturally high wheelbase of 2740mm is a characteristic feature of this car. The Ertiga has an aerodynamic body which enhances fuel efficiency and silences the wind noise. The front has minor cosmetic changes, the sweeping design headlamps at the sides are carried over from the old model. The changes include chrome lining on grille and fog lamp bezel and stylish front bumpers. The sides have no change with the usual sporty alloy wheels and ORVMs with turn indicators. The rear has some new elements, the taillights are unchanged here and here is the style stopper, chrome back door garnish which carries the "ERTIGA" lettering adds more elegance here. The rear bumpers are upgraded to add even more style.
Maruti Suzuki added the touch of elegance in the Ertiga's interiors. The colour scheme is dual tone with dashes of brown and beige, the driver's seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel gets audio and call control buttons. The stylish instrument panel gets a multi information display at the center. The top of the line Z+ trim get start/stop push button. There is plenty of storage spaces in seat pockets, passenger seat cupholder, front and rear doors, 3rd row cup holders, luggage box, glove box, centre armrest and dashboard rack. Z+ trim get touchscreen infotainment system. As it is an MPV, it also has a 2nd and 3rd row. Going to the 2nd row, there is a centre armrest for comfort and AC with controls for the cool breeze during long drives. An AC socket in the 2nd row is all needed to charge up your device on long drives. The boot space has the highest versatility which allows you to adjust the 2nd and 3rd row as per your convenience and pack your car with the things you love the most for long vacation getaways. It also provides a nice place to sleep as well. The 2nd row seats have 60:40 split with slide feature while the 3rd row seats have 50:50 split.
The petrol mill is peppy and has a good throttle response. The power delivery is smooth and gearshifts are good. 0-100km/hr in 13.56second is an impressive thing here and hence, overall performance is so good to thrill you.
The diesel engine has got the SHVS Smart Hybrid system which is the power player here. The ISG shuts the engine when the car comes to a halt, and starts it again when the clutch is pressed. Brake regeneration system collects the energy during braking and send it to the battery. The torque assist is the king here, it boosts the engine torque which improves fuel economy. However, the engine has a turbo lag until 2000rpm when the strong performance can be seen.
The large wheelbase is a blessing to the Ertiga. This gives superb handling. The soft suspension means it can absorb bumps and potholes well. Also, there is less body roll and the steering is light and accurate. Overall, the Ertiga is fun to drive.
The Ertiga is powered by two engines and has two transmission options-
The petrol mill is the 1373cc K14B engine which delivers a power of 89.8bhp at 6000rpm and torque of 130Nm at 4000rpm. This engine has two transmission options- 5 speed manual which is seen in all variants and gives a fuel efficiency of 17.50km/litre and 4-speed automatic transmission available only in VXI variant which gives a fuel efficiency of 17.03km/litre. The VXI variant also has a CNG option.
The diesel powerhouse is the 1248cc DDiS engine which gives a power of 87.2bhp at 4000rpm and torque of 200Nm at 1750rpm. This engine has the SHVS Smart Hybrid technology which provides fuel efficiency of 24.52km/litre. This engine has 5-speed manual transmission only.
Safety is important in a car. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga comes with many safety features. The body is made of high tensile steel which protect occupants in case of a crash. All variants get driver airbag as standard. Passenger airbag and ABS with EBD is standard in L(O),V, Z and Z+ trims. V, Z and Z+ variants get rear parking sensors and the Z+ trim get reverse parking camera as well. Security alarm is standard in V, Z and Z+ trims. The front seat belt is height adjustable.The seat belt reminder with buzzer is an important feature here. The large 185/65 R15 tyres are supported by McPherson Strut suspension in front and Torsion Beam suspension in rear. Ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes in rear complete the safety by providing optimum braking.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is priced from Rs. 6.87lakh to Rs. 10.00lakh. It is a good, fun to drive car which has a peppy engine, spacious interior with flexible folding seats, good ride quality and has gained so many happy, smiling customers. It is an affordable MPV and by no doubt, you should grab one before it is too late.
