Hyundai Xcent

Hyundai cars are famous for its trendy styles, fluidic design, powerful engines and comes loaded with cool features. Cars such as Santro, Grand i10, Elite i20, Verna and Creta gained popularity among people and also the cars won prestigious awards. With an aim to create an impact in the compact sedan segment, Hyundai launched its first compact sedan, Xcent, which is based on the Indian Car Of The Year (ICOTY) 2014 winner, the Grand i10. The Xcent replaced the ageing Hyundai Accent. To be in line with the 2017 Grand i10 facelift, Hyundai released the facelift version of the Xcent in April 2017. This car comes in 5 variants of E, E+, S, SX and SX(O) and 5 colour options of Sleek Silver, Star Dust, Wine Red, Polar White and Marina Blue. MYNEWCAR.IN recommends the SX(O) variant.

The Hyundai Xcent is remarkable in many aspects. Read ahead to know more-

Hyundai made the Xcent with ultra-modern styling. The car has a length of 3995mm, width of 1660mm and height of 1520mm. Hyundai emphasises greatly on passenger comfort, so the Xcent scores it well with a large wheelbase of 2425mm. The front is dominated by the cascading grille which is supported by stylish swept back headlamps on the side and stylish fog lamps with LED DRLs at the bottom. The sides defy aerodynamics with the 1st in segment wheel air curtains. There are two wheel options of 165/65 R14 steel and alloy wheel and larger 175/60 R15 alloy wheels. Other such features include ORVMs with turn indicators, chrome outside door handles and sleek waistline moulding. The rear is superbly styled by the wrap around combination taillamps on the sides, trunklid chrome garnish on the center and dual-tone rear bumper at the bottom. To add more style, the Xcent gets a 1st in segment Shark Fin antenna.

Hyundai always make new innovative designs for the interior. The Hyundai Xcent's interior is well crafted and is stylish. The driver seat is height adjustable and the tilt adjustable steering wheel gets audio and handsfree controls. There is engine start/stop button too. The instrument panel with the multi information display has a blue and white illumination which is soothing to the eye. The center console gets 7.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system. Hyundai loves to pamper its cars with storage spaces, and the Xcent got plenty of it on doors, centre console, cooled glove box, rear seat pockets and rear seat centre armrest. On the rear seat, apart from center storage, the headrests are adjustable to match your height and there is rear parcel tray also. The rear passengers can enjoy long cool rides with the rear AC vents . A large 407litre bootspace is just what you need for a long getaway and the trunk lamp is the best assistant when loading/unloading at night. The dual-tone black and beige theme is bought to life by chrome accents on various trim parts.

The diesel engine is an improvement over the previous generation Hyundai Xcent. It has a higher capacity and higher power than before. Start the engine and the characteristic 3 cylinder hum can be heard. However, it is not as smooth as its petrol counterpart but it is well-insulated. Rev the car up and see the eagerness of this engine coming alive. The acceleration response is quick and above 2000rpm you can feel its awesomeness. 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 15.58seconds and also has quick gear shifts. However approach 3500rpm and the joy of revving comes to an end. After this, engine rattle becomes evident.

The petrol powerhouse also makes its contribution to the driving joy. The wide torqueband allows the power to be experienced till 5000rpm and the 0-100km/h accleration takes 14.23seconds.

On the ride and handling section, bumps and potholes are dealt with comfortably. The sound isolation is done so well that the thumping sound is easily done away with. However sharp bumps and ridges are the only detriments here. Also, steering and handling is good and all it completes the fun to drive experience.

The Hyundai Xcent has two engine options and two transmission options-

The petrol mill is the 1197cc Kappa engine which delivers a power of 81.8bhp at 6000rpm and torque of 113.76Nm at 4000rpm. This engine comes with option of 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. This car has a fuel efficiency of 19.1km/litre as per the ARAI figures.

The diesel powerhouse is the 1186cc U2 CRDI engine which gives out a power of 74bhp at 4000rpm and torque of 190.25Nm at 1750rpm-2250rpm. This engine has only 5-speed manual transmission. When we drove the diesel model, we received a fuel economy in the range of 22-24km/litre.

Hyundai's cars are well-known for its safety features. The Hyundai Xcent's body is made from anti corrosive steel which provides rigidity. Dual front airbags are standard across all variants. Other features include ABS with EBD, immobilizer, central locking, day&night IRVM, rear defogger, parking assist and impact sensing auto door unlock. The Xcent gets its stability by McPherson Strut suspension in front and Coupled Torsion Beam Axle suspension in rear. The braking is provided by disc brakes in front and drum brakes in rear.

Let us say that the car is driven for 1000km a month i.e. 12,000km yearly. So, the cost of ownership for Hyundai Xcent can come upto Rs. 61,755 for one year, which includes Rs. 17,500 of insurance cost, Rs. 1,962 of maintenance cost and Rs. 42,293 of fuel cost. Here the loan interest is not factored in as it depends on person to person and the percentage of amount taken in loan.

The rivals of Hyundai Xcent are Maruti DZire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Volkswagen Ameo and Ford Figo Aspire. The Xcent has already gained many happy customers and is selling well. The future sales will tell whether the Xcent has won the competition or is overshadowed by its rivals.

Hyundai priced the Xcent from Rs. 5.73lakh to Rs. 8.94 lakh. Hyundai made the Xcent affordable and feature packed. As compared to its competitors, Hyundai priced it lower than them and crammed it with many 1st in segment features which makes this car a run for the money. This is the right time to buy the car otherwise it will be too late.
