Hyundai - India's No 1 SUV Maker with Venue, Creta & Alcazar
Hyundai becomes No. 1 SUV Maker of India with Venue, Creta and Alcazar. Check India's Top 5 SUV Brand in 2021
SUVs seem to be desired by Indian car buyers the most when it comes to new car purchases. While sedan or hatchback segments have shrunk over the years, the SUV space has witnessed a massive increase. The subcompact SUV space and the compact SUV space have the biggest sales. In all of this, one car maker has come out victorious in our love for SUVs. Hyundai is now the number 1 SUV maker in India in 2021. It has crossed 1 million unit sales across domestic and export markets. Plus month on month, their total SUV sales are highest. They have beaten Mahindra and others with multiple SUV offerings. Currently the Hyundai portfolio contains SUVs like Venue, Creta, Tucson and Kona Electric. The Tucson and Kona are not high sellers hence the major numbers come from both the Venue and the Creta. The Creta in its new generation is the biggest selling SUV of India with over 12,500 Creta sold in March,2021 while the Venue has also seen an increase in demand with over 10,700 Venue sold in March,2021. Both outsell other carmakers with their SUV and that has enabled the India's Number 1 SUV maker tag to be given to Hyundai with a market share of over 25%.
The new Creta for example has sold over 1.21 Lakh units since its launch in 2020. Over half of them are for the SX & SX(O) variants with both the diesel and petrol models being well received. The Creta in its new generation model has hit the sweet spot in terms of size and product positioning with its class best features list and gearbox/engine options.
Now Hyundai will also enjoy a probable increase in sales when the 6/7 Seater Alcazar comes. The Alcazar is based on the Creta and has three row seating while it also will have a 2.0 petrol- factors that will set it apart from the Creta. The Alcazar also has a more premium interior with the longest wheelbase. We think the Alcazar will sell in as many numbers as the Creta or at least the Venue (total sales more than 30k units a month), thus giving Hyundai a third hit in the SUV segment.

At number two is Hyundai Motor Group's second brand - Kia with a SUV market share of about 20% with the successful launch of Seltos and Sonet
Mahindra used to be the SUV market leader with more than 50% market share and are currently at number 3 position with around 19% SUV market share. Mahindra may be able to regain the number 2 position with the success of New Thar and launch of New XUV700 and Next Generation Scorpio by the end of 2021.
Maruti Suzuki occupies the number 4 spot with around 14% SUV market share based on the success of Vitara Brezza but is facing stiff competition from newly launched sub-compact SUVs like Magnite, Kiger and Venue which is available with both Petrol & Engine option unlike Brezza. Maruti Suzuki is working on launching 3 new SUVs in the next 2 years including 5-Seater 4x4 Jimny, New mid-size SUV to rival Creta and an entry level sub-compact SUV below the Vitara Brezza to rival Magnite & Kiger.
At Number 5 is Tata Motors with about 9% SUV market share. It has gained significant market share with the successful launch of Nexon, Harrier and Safari. Tata Motors is expected to launch the Harrier Petrol, HBX/Hornbill Micro SUV and Hexa 4x4 SUV by end of 2021 to increase their SUV portfolio and SUV market share
Overall, Maruti Suzuki is India’s Largest carmaker followed by Hyundai and Tata Motors.
