New Mahindra Thar Petrol Mileage - Real World Fuel Economy
New Mahindra Thar Petrol Actual Mileage Review - Claimed vs Real World Fuel Economy (City & Highway)
The Thar is currently flying from the showroom with a long waiting period of over 9 months. Compared to the old Thar, the new Thar is bigger, has a new platform and is much more user friendly than before with comfort features. Also new to the Thar is the addition of a petrol engine. The new 2020 Thar has a big 2.0 petrol unit which makes 150 bhp and 320Nm while gearbox options include a torque converter 6-speed automatic and a manual. The automatic Thar which we tested was brilliant in its performance due to the smoothness of the gearbox plus the engine. The Thar petrol comes with a big engine and that helps it make a lot of power. Unlike other vehicles of this size, Mahindra gave it a bigger engine and that helps. In the city the torque is enough and you can cruise brilliantly while the surge which the engine gives you is surprising. The big Thar easily goes very fast and is quick for such a heavy car. The automatic gearbox is also well placed here for the shifts are well laid out and not very slow. There are no paddle shifters but you do not care.
This article is about the mileage of the Thar petrol in city and highway driving conditions and that is an important question. You see in cities, people would prefer a petrol engine and that engine here is quite good in terms of performance. However for mileage loving people, the Thar does not quite fit the bill. The 2.0 petrol is big and the Thar is a heavy car as well. Plus its boxy design is not very aerodynamic- add in the automatic gearbox and you get a SUV which is not very fuel efficient
The claimed mileage of New Mahindra petrol manual variant under ARIA test condition is 15.2 kmpl. But during real word testing in the city, the new Thar petrol gave us a mileage of 8 kmpl and that is what you will get most probably. If out on the highway the fuel economy figure increases to about 9/10 kmpl. During off-roading or driving it fast, you will get a mileage of about 7 kmpl. That means the Thar petrol is not the most efficient car but it is an enjoyable car and we think many will live with the mileage on offer.
