Ferrari has unveiled their 50th convertible model and the latest iteration of the 488 Pista model at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach in California.
The 488 Pista was launched earlier this year at the Geneva motor show. The 488 Pista is the what the 458 Speciale is to the 458 Italia and the Pista Spider is what the Speciale Aperta is to Speciale. Sounds confusing, right? 488 Pista spider is a much more track focused, lighter, and powerful version of the standard 488 coupe with an open-top roof. The convertible uses the most powerful Ferrari V8 ever made with 710 bhp and 770Nm. 100 comes in 2.85 seconds with a top speed of 340 kmh. The Pista Spider weighs in at 1380 kgs which is actually lighter than the coupe. Yes, you read that right. Ferrari claims that the Spider can be lighter than the coupe with the right list of optional specifications (read optional as expensive). It also happens to be the first production Ferrari road going convertible car to be actually lighter than its coupe counter-part.
The convertible comes with a new 20-inch diamond finish alloys with the option of a single piece carbon fibre wheel which is 20% lighter. The car features a unique stripe livery which runs down the whole centre of the car right to the rear wing, which according to Ferrari denotes the movement of airflow. The body work replicates the coupe counterpart with Ferrari describing the car’s design as “the perfect marriage of aerodynamic efficiency, purity of form, and racing spirit.” The interior is clad in Alcantara and Carbon fibre with aluminum footplates instead of carpets. Simple and rudimentary straps act as door handles, thank the Italians in Maranello for not using a cable like in the F40, although we secretly love it. The 3902cc twin-turbo V8 was recently named Best Engine in the world for the third consecutive year at the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards. The convertible also features the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE), which makes on-the-limit driving more intuitive, controllable and predictable.
The 488 Pista Spider is an iteration of an already focused and fast car with the perk of having an open-top for sensory overload. A convertible weighing lighter than the coupe counterpart is also unprecedented and groundbreaking. But, is it Speciale special?
