Maruti Swift sales cross 20 lacs units in India

Maruti Suzuki India has revealed that the Swift hatchback has crossed the two million sales milestones in the domestic market. The Maruti Swift initially launched in India in 2005, struck the chord with the buyers and created a premium hatchback segment which was unseen back then. The later generations of the swift were also equally successful with sales numbers conveying the same story.

Maruti-Suzuki-SwiftThe third-generation Swift is built on the fifth-generation Heartect platform and was launched at the Auto Expo 2018. Maruti Suzuki India says the new Swift achieved the fastest 1,00,000 sales bookings, in less than 10 weeks, which saw the company increase production of the car by 45 per cent to 1,39,000 units during April-October 2018 as compared to April-October 2017.

The third-generation swift is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, along with AMT and manual transmissions. Maruti Suzuki Swift has priced from Rs 4.99 lakhs to Rs 7.76 lakhs for the petrol and Rs 5.99 lakhs to Rs 8.76 lakhs for the diesel variant.

Maruti-Suzuki-Swift_coloursRS Kalsi, senior executive director (M&S) at Maruti Suzuki India, said: “Brand Swift has consistently featured among the top five bestselling cars in India for more than a decade. I would like to express my gratitude to all our customers. The success is strongly associated with the Swift’s dynamic performance, advanced design, and technology, reliability, durability and best-in-class fuel-efficiency that characterize Maruti Suzuki’s DNA.”

Mahindra Alturas G4 launched in India at Rs 26.95 Lakh

Mahindra-Alturas-G4

Mahindra has launched the Alturas G4 in India at a price of Rs 26.95 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). The Alturas G4 is a rebadged version of the SsangYong Rexton which is sold outside India. The car will be available with the option of a 4WD and a 2WD.

Mahindra-Alturas-G4_1The underpinnings of the SUV reek of old-school characteristics with a rather ubiquitous ladder-frame chassis. The car is bigger, wider and taller than the Rexton which was previously sold in India under the SsangYong moniker.  The SUV measures 4,850mm in length; 1,960mm in width; 1,825mm in height with a 2,865mm long wheelbase. The Ground clearance is also a big step up from the predecessor at 244mm.

Mahindra-Alturas-G4_interior2018Under the hood is a new 2.2-litre SsangYong diesel engine which makes a healthy 178hp at 4000rpm and 420Nm of torque at 1600-2600rpm. Power is sent to two or four wheels through a Mercedes Benz sourced 7-speed Gtronic transmission; it is also equipped with a shift-on-fly four-wheel drive system.

Mahindra-Alturas-G4_2Some of the features that are available with the SUV are 4WD, HID headlamps , LED fog lamps with cornering function, Power tailgate , Brown and black quilted leather upholstery , 9 airbags , Auto up and down for both front and rear windows, Colour TFT-LCD display for the instrument cluster , 360 degree surround camera , Illuminated scuff plates , Auto tilt function for ORVMs, 8 way power driver's seat, and TPMS for front tires. The 2WD variant will miss out some of the salient features; however, it still comes loaded when you factor in the price.

The SUV has got loads of presence and it is the tallest car among its main rivals-  Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Dethroning the endeavour, which is currently the segment leader, seems arduous as the endeavour is more powerful with better off-road credentials than the both. However, where the Alturas G4 shines is the pricing; the G4 undercuts its counterparts by a considerable margin. The Alturas G4 4WD automatic costs 29.95 lakhs (introductory) while the Ford Endeavour costs Rs 32.81 lakh and the Toyota Fortuner costs Rs 32.97 lakh for the 4WD automatic variants.

McLaren 720S Spider teased

Mclaren-720s-spider_01

McLaren has teased an image of its upcoming spider version of the 720S; the official unveil will happen on December 8, 2018. The 720S spider will be the company’s second spider offering on sale along with the 570S Spider.

It can be seen from the teaser image that there are no visual design differences between the coupe and the spider version. McLaren will be using a hard-top folding roof rather than a fabric roof. The roof will most likely increase the weight of the super series which is currently at 1434 kgs. It is yet to been seen if McLaren can keep the weight of the spider in tune with the coupe, something which Ferrari casually pulled off earlier this year with the 488 Pista spider. Speed tail was also unveiled by McLaren some weeks back which, along with the spider is a part of the British brands Track25 strategy.

Mclaren-720s-spider_02A 720S spider will use the same engine as in the coupe which is a 3,994 cc M840T twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 720 PS at 7,000 rpm, giving the car its name; the maximum torque is 770 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The spider will accelerate to 100 in under 3 secs (Given the increase in weight) as the couple does it in an astonishing 2.5 secs. Top speed will also be similar; albeit, a bit less for the spider due to aerodynamic changes and an increase in overall weight.

The 720S has mimicked a spaceship as its blisteringly fast with similar performance as much expensive hypercars. If everything goes like McLaren’s now-familiar fashion, we might be looking at an even bonkers long-tail version of the 720S next year. Now, that’s going to humiliate some even more accomplished hypercars and supercars from the land of pasta and pizza.

Volkswagen confirms joint development with Ford

VW Group has announced that it has joined hands with Ford to jointly develop commercial vehicles. The group revealed this new alliance at the German carmaker’s annual board meeting press conference smashing all the rumours of a possible collaboration among the two brands.

At the conference, VW Group CEO Herbert Diess revealed the Group has increased its five-year investment into electric vehicles, autonomous and connected technology from €34 billion (Rs 2,77,032 crore) to €44 billion (Rs 358,512 crore), around a third of the carmaker's total expenditure for the period. Of that sum, €30 billion (Rs 2,44,440 crore) will be put into electric mobility, including everything from platform and powertrain development to infrastructure investment.

Volkswagen--Ford2018 VW Works council head Bernd Osterloh discussed the brand's desire to be "part of battery manufacturing close to where the cars are produced". Diess added that it "doesn't make sense" to spread EV production across Europe. VW's current trio of dedicated electric vehicle plants across Germany is claimed to be the largest network of EV production across Europe.

At the moment, the brands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will allow them to explore synergies between the two organizations. The companies clarified that the alliance will not involve any equity arrangements or cross ownership stakes. What follows of this alliance will be a range of commercial vehicles, vans and other projects which can improve both the brands. There have been similar tie-ups in the past like Renault-Nissan, the most recent ones being Toyota-Suzuki and Ford-Mahindra.
