Car Comparison : New 2020 Toyota Glanza vs Volkswagen Polo

These days there are many segments which are clashing with each other and leaving consumers confused as to which car to buy. These days you have premium hatchbacks, sedans or compact SUVs aiming to attract the wallet of the Rs.10 lakh on-road price car buyer.
However for this price bracket we think buying a premium hatchback is one the best options because they offer you looks and features plus also equipment and are fun to drive yet are not big. They are also not difficult to park or are not as heavy on fuel bills as bigger cars at this price. Thus we look at two of the newest premium hatchbacks for a comparison.
Looks

If you are spending near Rs.10 lakh on a car regardless of the type of car, you would want your car to look premium and both of these do exactly that. They are premium looking hatchbacks and look expensive. The Glanza looks bigger because it is and has the bigger stance along with a set of striking headlamps along with a nice chrome grille. There are really good looking 16inch alloys while the rear has a nice flow with a sloping look.
The Polo does not look as big as the Glanza but it makes up for that by having a European design that is timeless and not as flashy as the Toyota. It is sportier and still looks good to this day while the changes to the Polo, especially with new look the bumpers, makes it sportier still. The design of the Polo is simple but it has its fans and still looks very good plus we love those 16inch alloys too!
Interior and Features
Both have a different approach as the Polo, much like the exterior, has a simple but high quality interior. It is also the sportier of the two. We love the simple dials that are easy and not very difficult on the eye while the flat-bottomed steering is lovely to hold. The Glanza get a much more complicated set of dials with plenty of colour plus the unique display while the centre console with the V-shape design looks more futuristic.
In terms of space the Glanza is the easy winner here as it has a much bigger cabin and boot with the rear seat also having good space. The Polo in comparison feels smaller inside but while the Polo lacks space the superb build quality is something that it excels in. Simply put the Polo is the best built hatch with its solid feeling cabin.
In terms of features both offer you all the basics and some more like climate control, touch-screen infotainment system, voice commands etc. However there are some differences. The Polo gets features like cruise control, rear ac vents, cooled glove-box, auto wipers while the Glanza has features like a rear view camera, navigation and a bigger touch-screen. Both have airbags plus ABS as standard so safety is not compromised in both.
Driving
Both offer you two types of petrol engines but no diesel. The Glanza has two 1.2 petrols as there is a 83 bhp/113Nm 1.2l and another 90 bhp 1.2l. The difference is that the 83 bhp one is the standard engine which has a 5-speed manual as well as a CVT automatic. The other is only manual and comes with the Smart Hybrid system which saves more fuel plus it is the more advanced engine.
The Polo base trims offer a 1.0 petrol with 75 bhp and 95Nm of torque with a 5-speed manual as satndard. Then the higher trims get the 1.0 TSI turbo petrol with a solid 110 bhp and 175Nm with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic option. To drive, both are as different as they come. The Glanza is all about the ease of driving while the Polo is all about being sporty. The Glanza feels light and is easy to drive plus it is incredibly efficient- even the CVT automatic which is brilliant. Where the Polo shines is the engine and performance. The 1.0 TSI offers more performance on paper plus the dynamics of the Polo are more fun. To enjoy driving or drive comfortably- take your pick!
Verdict
The Volkswagen Polo range starts from Rs.5.8 lakh while the top-end TSI range starts from Rs.7.8 lakh to Rs.9.6 lakh. The Toyota Glanza starts at Rs.7 lakh and goes till Rs.9 lakh. Let us be clear that these two are currently the best hatchbacks that you can buy right now in the premium segment. The Glanza is something you buy with your head especially with the Toyota peace of mind plus the mileage, space, comfort and we like the CVT too.
The Volkswagen is something you buy with your heart and thus there is no doubt that spending more and going for the TSI turbo petrol is the one to go for. It is more exciting, has more performance plus feels more solid if also lacking in space and a few features. So yes these two are the two new kings of the premium hatchback segment and buying either to suit your needs will do you just right!
