New Hyundai i20 vs Nissan Magnite Turbo
With diesel being running out of favour with small cars or compact SUVs, the next big step is the turbo petrol. The turbo petrol engine remains small in size but has a good amount of power and efficiency too. Thus we are seeing three cylinder turbo petrol engines coming in all sorts of cars. Recently Hyundai launched the new i20 with also a turbo petrol but along with that Nissan will also launch the Magnite with a same 1.0 turbo which means you need to know which one is better in terms of specs.
Dimensions and Looks
One is a compact SUV and the other is a premium hatchback but we will compare the dimensions anyways. The i20 is longer but the Magnite is wider while the Magnite also has the bigger ground clearance. In terms of looks both are attractive with sharp LED lamps with projectors and big 16inch alloys. There is a dual tone in both and both are sporty. The Magnite is an attractive SUV and the bigger ground clearance is an advantage while the i20 looks bigger and wider plus sleeker due to the lower height.
Interior and Features
The i20 has a longer wheelbase over the Magnite and that is shown in the way the space is. The i20 feels more spacious over the Magnite and that is true especially at the rear with the width. The Magnite is not bad but lacks the width while the i20 has slightly better legroom too. We might add the Magnite has better space than the Venue but the new i20 is really spacious. In terms of design the i20 is futuristic but so is the Magnite. However the i20 seems to have a more premium cabin where the Magnite could have had better plastics used inside.
That said the Magnite has the better instrument cluster with customizable menus and screens while the i20 instrument cluster with also being digital is not as clear. The battle of touch screen is also there and while the Magnite has a 8inch one and works quite smoothly the new i20 is better and bigger at 10.25inch.
In other features the Magnite has a full around view monitor and a front camera while the new i20 has a sunroof. The Magnite has a 6 speaker audio while the i20 has a 7-speaker one. Both have wireless charging and other important features while the i20 adds in a air purifier and connected tech. Both have the basics like climate control, rear ac vents and cruise control. Dual airbags are for Magnite and 6 are for i20 plus the usual safety systems.
Turbo Engine and Mileage
Let us talk about the turbo petrol engines in both. The Magnite Turbo gets a 1.0 turbo which makes 98 bhp and 160Nm. The i20 also has a 1.0 turbo but makes 120 bhp and 172Nm. The Magnite turbo has a 5-speed manual while the new i20 turbo does not offer a manual as it has an iMT while the most expensive version has the 7-speed DCT automatic dual clutch. The Magnite turbo has a CVT automatic.
The Magnite turbo will deliver 20 kmpl while the new i20 turbo will give 20.25 kmpl for the DCT auto and 20 kmpl for iMT. It seems the new i20 has more power but the Magnite would weigh less than the i20 so it might even out though the DCT gearbox on the i20 is faster over the CVT in its nature.
Price and Verdict
The new i20 Turbo starts at Rs 8.79 lakh for an iMT to Rs 11.1 lakh for the DCT. The Magnite is expected to be cheaper than the i20 while we expect the Turbo to be Rs 7 lakh to start with and maybe Rs 9.5 lakh onwards for the Turbo CVT. That makes the Magnite a lot cheaper than the i20 but the new i20 has the more power plus the DCT along with better interiors and features. So if you want a turbo on a slight budget the Magnite might make sense to wait for while the i20 is the more premium and better option.
