Mini, an automobile brand owned by the BMW group, has announced to launch its all electric Cooper SE hatchback in India in 2021. The British automotive brand was initially founded in 1969 and taken over by BMW group later in 2000. The brand was mainly responsible for the production of mini cars for the British Leyland group. Currently, Mini offers 5 new cars in India with a price starting at Rs. 29.90 lakh for Cooper 3 Door to Rs. 43.50 for the top model.
The brand introduced its all electric Cooper SE earlier last year which promised a huge success story. The launch that was initially rumored to follow soon after has now been pushed to 2021. The reason for this delay is the lack of EV related infrastructure and sales in this field. BMW India is being cautious with the launch of Cooper and will be launching it once the infrastructure is highly developed and ready to go.
In an interview with Autocar India, the vice president of mini, Francois Roca of mini Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle-east and Africa said that the Cooper SE is not a priority in Indian automotive market. He said in the interview, āWeāre ramping up the production, so we will be servicing the first markets that are near the plant. It will come eventually.ā Further adding, āWe need infrastructure. So when there will be very large infrastructure, it definitely makes sense to have the BEV in the Indian market. Today, I would say it canāt be that we have to be in India with the BEV to tick a box.ā
The Cooper is designed keeping a city car in mind. So it is safe to assume that the car will not be of much use for the longer journeys. From the sources, it can be seen that the car will have limited mileage but since it is tagged as a city car, this is not expected to affect the sales much. The engine used for Cooper will be derived from I3S which is an all electric project by BMW. The two cars will be based on the same platform.
The I3S is mated with a 32.6kwh battery that produces 184hp of power and 270Nm of torque. The car delivers a certified range of 235-270km which is moderately enough for a city car. The car will have a 150kph top speed with 0-100kph reaching in claimed 7.3sec.the car will be offered with fast charging with it charging from 0-80 percent in 35min. With normal charge the car takes about 150min-210min to fully charge.
There are no known competitors for the Mini Cooper SE right now after its launch so the car is expected to do well in the market considering no change in situation.
