Expert Review : Skoda Rapid TSI First Look

Skoda has launched its sedan with a new petrol engine. The Rapid is the most affordable car in the Skoda range and with BS6 coming in from April, the Rapid now gets a 1.0 TSI petrol plus a change in its price and positioning. The Rapid has been on sale for long but has been a steady seller however now post BS6, Skoda is concentrating on petrol with no diesel. However with an attractive price the Rapid TSI will do good numbers so here is a detailed first look at the Skoda Rapid TSI and how it stacks up with its rivals.
Skoda Rapid TSI Engine and Performance
The Rapid gets a new TSI turbo petrol which is 1.0 litres. It makes 110 bhp and 175Nm of torque. On offer at the moment is a 6-speed manual only while there would be no DSG automatic as instead it will have a 6-speed torque converter automatic later not now. There is no diesel and this is the only engine with which the Rapid is available with. The mileage of the Rapid TSI is 18.97 kmpl. The 1.0 turbo with a manual would be fun and give enough performance while move to a traditional automatic for the Rapid is because it would be much cheaper than a DSG automatic which the earlier Rapid had with its diesel engine.
Skoda Rapid TSI Features and Changes
The Rapid TSI gets new alloys while that is it in terms of changes on the exterior. The Rapid TSI gets some feature upgrades though like four airbags now, 8inch touch-screen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay while it has rear ac vents, cruise control, auto headlamps and auto wipers, climate control etc. In terms of design or space nothing has changed and while in terms of features it is not class best the space inside is quite good with enough space for three along with decent storage spaces. Quality is very good with a solid feeling interior.
Skoda Rapid Price and Value
The Rapid with the TSI now is one of the most affordable midsize sedans with a turbo petrol. It competes with the Hyundai Verna which has a turbo petrol while the upcoming new Honda City or Maruti Ciaz, Toyota Yaris have standard petrol engines. Of course there is the Volkswagen Vento as its brother which has the same engine but it is more expensive. The Rapid starts at Rs 7.4 lakh which makes it one of the most affordable cars with a turbo petrol plus a manual. There is the top-spec Monte Carlo, Onyx also which are a bit more expensive with added features which we have discussed above. So Skoda wants to get some good numbers and with an aggressive price-tag it will do well for those who want a petrol sedan which is fun to drive. At this price there are cars like the Hyundai Aura which have a turbo petrol and a manual gearbox though the Skoda is a midsize sedan.
