New Mahindra Thar vs Maruti Jimny

One of the biggest battles of this year would be fought on the SUV turf. No we are not talking of the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta as another big battle will take place in the off-road enthusiast segment. Yes, we are talking about the new Mahindra Thar and the Maruti Jimny. Both of these new SUVs are expected to come to India soon but while the new Thar is due in a few months time, the Jimny would be expected to come early next year. So here is a preview of how these two SUVs compare and while this is not a proper comparison of course, this is a taste of the good times that off-road enthusiasts are in for.
Looks
Again, the final specifications of both these two cars are not out for our market but both follow the design brief of being a proper off-road SUV. Thus both would be boxy, feature a big grille and have big wheel-arches. Interestingly the Jimny for India is the 5-door version and not the 3-door while the Thar would be a three-door version. Another difference is that the new Thar would be expected to be offered in both hardtop and soft-top trims.
In terms of looks the new Thar would be carrying the design of the older one but with some changes. It would be bigger and wide plus have an equally bigger grille while there would be 18inch alloys too. There would also be LED headlamps plus tail-lamps with DRLs.
The Jimny would also have round headlamps along with a slotted grille plus its proportions would be boxy too. But in terms of dimensions the Jimny is smaller in length and width over the Thar.
Interiors
Both would offer a decently equipped cabin with all the necessary features but compared to a crossover they would be less. The new Thar and Jimny are focused on being hard-core off-roaders but also good enough to be used for everyday commutes. The current Thar is too basic but the new one is much better. There would be more space and more features. It will have a touch-screen, a rear view camera, powered mirrors and more. The quality and design would be much better too.
However here the Jimny is expected to have the more futuristic cabin and it also has all the usual features but might add in more! However in terms of space the Thar being bigger might have more of it!
Engines
Both are designed to be off-roaders hence both will have 4x4 and a low-range gearbox which is crucial. Plus in terms of design both have the right size and a higher chin for off-roading. However we feel the smaller Jimny having a bit more advantage here due to its size. The new Thar would offer you more engines though as the Jimny would be petrol only. We expect a 1.5l petrol for the Jimny and a 4-speed automatic plus a 5-speed manual.
The new Thar would offer a diesel plus a petrol with the diesel being a 2.2 unit while the Thar petrol would be a 2.0 unit and that would have the automatic.
Price and Launch
The new Thar is coming in a few months time and would have the early advantage while prices would be Rs 10 lakh plus and different trims would push it higher than the current one. The new Jimny would be Rs 10 lakh plus also while it would offer less options and you have to also wait till early next year! In the end if you love off-roading, road trips and want a proper off-road, the coming months would be the best time for you to buy!
